There is a lot of controversy surrounding the place but I like it and I think the administration does a good job. I grew up with visits to the zoo once in a while so it is my happy place. ☺

the animals are clearly distressed and starving and emotional abused! there is no room for them to move and it's terribly maintained. there is a seal show and an elephant show which is too heart breaking to watch.do not support this! and we must work towards releasing these animals to sanctuaries as i doubt they have the skills to cope in the wild. this place needs to be shut down its wretched!

National Zoological garden located in Dehiwala was founded in 1936, one of the oldest zoo in Asia. It is home to remarkable collection of exotic and native fauna in purpose of support and promote conservation of rare animal species. Major exhibits here are mammals, reptiles, birds including both native and exotic, fish and butterflies. Though it is a zoo, it has dense floral collection including very rare medicinal plants. It provides a good shade and makes the environment cool. The butterfly house, native birds house and exotic bird house are beautifully maintained. The garden and pathways are well maintained but sad to say, cages and animal houses are not in good condition. All seems to be packed.
They are conducting elephant performances daily at 5.15 p.m. onwards. But elephant' s living conditions here are pathetic, most of the time they are chained. The daily sea lion performances commence at 4 p.m.
When considering facilities to visitors it is good. There are restaurants, ice cream shops and souvenir shops.
It is open to public on daily basis from 8.30 am to 5.30 pm and it is easily accessible by public transport.

Filthy awful zoo, my heart broke for the animals living in those conditions. We where charged $70 AUD for a family (4 times higher than the locals one thing I don't think encourages tourists to visit and let me tell you it was NOT worth it because I don't think much of that money goes to the poor creatures). The facilities where in a disgraceful state of neglect, we saw rotten food in the animal feed trays, rubbish everywhere. The entrance staff where very rude (because being rude to tourists really lures them in...crazy)! The toilet facilities OMG don't even ask about the state of those....disgusting!!!!! We left feeling angry and really upset about the welfare of the animals! Apparently they get the elephants to perform, but all we saw was them chained up with a chain around each leg. But it was the state in which they where kept :’( It was the lowest point for our trip to Sri Lanka!!! Something needs to be done about that zoo!!!
