To be honest I am rather surprised how other places are praising this place so highly. Me and my gf spent there 2 nights and I have to say it was the worse experience out of entire Cambodia and we have back packed for 2 months by then and had our share of bad place.

We had arranged a pickup, which never materialized, though when we arrived at the hostel, the guy who was suppose to pick us up did appear, apparently he missed us. The place has only one toilet and one shower on the whole place(at least we didn't find any other). Walls are so thin that we talked to our buddies who were in the other room through the wall and you could hear everything that was happening around you. When we were showed to our room we asked for a remote for the TV, they said that TV didn't have one, the buttons on TV didn't work properly either, was quite a work to get anything out of it.

What really annoyed us was really the fact that we booked tuk tuks for our tour to see S21 and Killing Fields. When we came down, there was no tuk tuk, when we asked they didnt know about it, then they remembered and ordered it. Same thing happened when we ordered tuk tuk for airport. We were told tuk tuk will wait for us in the morning 30 mins before requested time. As usual there was no tuk tuk! After waiting for 10 minutes, they ordered the tuk tuk and we had to argue that we agreed to pay $6 for it, as they initially wanted to ask 10, then 7 and finally agreed on 6 when we got angry about bantering.

Now a tip - $6 dollars is way over priced, it at most pay 5 but we think 4 is reasonable as it says in Lonely Planet. They say its $6 cause it is so far away - 40 minute drive and such. That is complete bull****. It took us 15 minutes from Chivas Shack to get to Airport and driver was on purpose driving super slow ( we were actually concerned if we are going to make it - till we realised - when we arrive - he was on purpose slow to make it look as if it is longer).

Oh yeah one more thing, the place is next to the brothell, if that rocks your boat I suppose its good, but in general the whole place left very dirty, poorly runned place. It was only place we stayed in Phnom Penh and maybe there are other better places, but in general I would not recommend to stay there, just too dodgy.

We stayed for 3 nites before travelling to siem reap and another 2 nites after. By far the best and friendliest place we've ever stayed! We didn't want to leave and have already made plans to go back next year. we've only been gone a few days and already want to back!!! The food is also amazing if you chose to eat there - try the samosas!

Me and my friends went to Chiva Shack in Phnom Penn and we had intentions of staying one night and it took a week to get away from the place. They treat you better in Chiva Shack than anywhere I have ever been before or since. Nothing is to much trouble and they know how to make you feel at home. I will always stay there when I am in Phnom Penn and when I am not in Phnom Penn I will miss Jinling and her staff.

Found this place in Phnom Phen on my third day in the city and it was a oasis. I stayed in the lakeside area for the first night as recommended by Lonely Planet and other travelers but it was a mistake. The area is shut off from the rest of the city and the guesthouses area dirty. I stayed in a $5 hotel the second night but this place--Chivas Shack is right on the riverside, run by a family, near all the good bars and resturaunts and perfect for the any traveler. Its clean, cheap($5) for a double bed and has a pool table, excellent food, and perfect locations from which to explore the city. Unless you are trying to live on one dollar a day, make your way to this place as it has excellent locale, is impeccably clean, near all the right places and just opened 7 months ago(new beds and sheets). Really, it was like an oasis from the filth of lakeside guesthouses and the impersonal/expensive hotels in the riverside area. Goto Chivas Shack, the family makes it the best.
