This review is for the Senja Lounge branch in Kiulap.

Decided to head into Kiulap for a western meal and we chose Senja Lounge. We had steaks which were cooked to medium perfection, they were tender and melted in mouth. Best steaks we had so far in Brunei. The sides were tasty too, we had mash and salads. For dessert, we had crème brulee. Apart from the crusty top, it was disappointing as it was so bland and sweet. If you ever dine here, just skip the desserts.

June 2014 - Currently Closed For Refurbishment (I think). Hope it would be nicer than other hotels when it is completed. It has a centralised location, near to the capital, Gadong, Kiulap the commercial centres, and the airport is about 10 minutes by car.

Located on the ground floor of Riverview Hotel in Bandar, the hotel is not impressive but the western cuisine in Senja is the best in the country. Brunei do not have many authentic western food and even if the outlet claims to be one, we'll categorise that as fusion. Senja is a great place to dine and entertain and one can bring in alcoholic drinks to enjoy with the meal, a rare special perk which expats only get to enjoy here. Great food, lovely decor but slightly pricey. It's advisable to place a reservation with the hotel desk with confirmation from the restaurant staff later in the afternoon because it is an extremely popular place!

Stayed here for 24 hr stop over. Emailed three times to arrange airport pick up, no reply and no pick up !. Luckily there was a taxi waiting which took us on the very short drive, for the set $25, which is avoids negotiating a price, but is pretty expensive. First impression was that the hotel was probably quite smart in its hay day, but is definitely in need of an external make over. On entering there were several men sprawled over the lounge suites' chairs in the foyer. I think they were staff/drivers. Reception staff were friendly but dismissive when I enquired about my emails, saying transport is not offered. I understood that but just wanted them to arrange a taxi. Subject changed quickly. Help given with taking bags to room. Tiny lift, a little squashy with the luggage, but it worked. On entering the room there was a strong odour of dampness which my husband found quite unpleasant, to the point of considering moving hotels. There had been a leak from a room above and the repair job was very basic. There was mould on the windows sills and the windows were so dirty you couldn't see out properly. No worries about looking out the window anyway as the view was very ordinary to say the least. There had obviously been an attempt to upgrade this room, the curtains and carpet looked quite new. However, the sheets we really thin and had several holes and tears in them, but the bed was quite comfy if you haven't slept for 24 hours. The A/c worked ok but there were no individual controls for the room. TV worked but only had one English speaking channel. There was a fridge but no complimentary bottled water and two teabags. The bathroom was in need of a great deal of TLC. The grout in the tiling was really mouldy, the bath did not look clean,( hairs in the tub), there were not enough towels for two people and the complimentary body wash was in half filled bottles that had obviously been used for many months. Extra towels and more half filled bottles were supplied quickly by the pleasant housekeeper, who also provided us with an iron and ironing board which we had to request and a few extra teabags. She also returned to fix the TV and worried us as she proceed to put a ball point pen in the socket to help get the plug in. We walked around the hotel, in order to check out the café/restaurant and see where we could access the internet. The whole place looked slightly decrepit, with ceilings on need or repair, poorly fitting carpet etc. The pool was attractive looking in the evening, but in the daylight the water was cloudy and there was some algae growing. we did not risk taking a swim, which was a shame as we chose this hotel because the photos of the pool looked attractive and we just wanted a relaxing, sitting by a pool, type of stopover. We had room service , which was quick. Local dish was very tasty; western dish , not so tasty. However, the club sandwich which we each had the next day was nice. No where near the standard of the club sandwiches at the Empire, but half the price but half as filling. Breakfast offered minimal selcation and would probably been ok when it was cooked. However by the time we arrived there, at 09.45 it was all pretty cold and uninviting, so we just had toast, butter and jam, no other condiment's on offer, and stewed tea. The fruit juice tasted like the sweetest cordial you could get. The lady did make a fresh pot for us when we asked. Be careful where you sit in the café as parts of the ceiling ( huge white plaster tiles) look like they could fall down at any time. The return taxi was booked for us, as unlike several other hotels there was not a complimentary airport bus.
The best thing about this stay was that we were given a very late checkout (as our flight was in the evening ), which we really appreciated, and the room was quiet so we slept well. . Wouldn't stay here again. Hotel is in need of some capital expenditure.
