“Sunset River Safari”

Reviewed 1 May 2016 via mobile

The sunset was nice but the monkeys were far far away n there's no crocs in sight. Its better to do the morning tour to the safari as there's better chance of spotting wildlife when its low tide...

I contacted Wann at 2am the night before to see if they could squeeze in a last min tour for the next day. She got back to me 6am and confirmed! From that first e-mail, all the way through to the end of the tour, Wann and Mark were gracious, knowledgable, accommodating, sweet hearted and a pleasure to be around. We did the tour in the afternoon when it's harder to spot the monkeys, but Mark was determined to find them, and right before giving up, He did! Mark has the eyes of an Hawk, it is unbelievable how he spots the wild life and then spends 5 min trying to get our eyes to see what he is seeing! They are a great couple and have a great balance and flow to their work. Everyone on the tour had a fabulous time! And Mark sent us all pictures of the monkey's at the end of it all!

We specifically booked with Mark Putera Delima and his lovely wife Wann because of reviews in TripAdvisor and we were not disappointed. Their enthusiasm and knowledge of the wildlife of Brunei was fantastic and we saw lots of Proboscis Monkeys as well as macaque monkeys, monitors, a crocodile and a variety of birds over about 2.5 hours. The highlight of our holiday!

I was afraid that they would feed the monkeys to lure them close to the boat, like the whale sharks in Cebu. But Mark and his wife both have keen eyes to spot the wildlife from far away. Then he kills the motor on the boat and drifts in for a closer look. He travels with a whole library of books to help identify the birds, snakes, monkeys, etc. that we saw. His wife did more of the talking and clearly has great pride in her country, and love of its natural beauty.

Whilst in Brunei we wanted to see the proboscis monkeys, as they are such an unusual animal, but we had heard that the river trips can be quite pricey and we are travelling on a budget. However we went down to the river to have a look at the floating village (quite interesting to have a wander around and get lost) and we met Wann! She offered us a very reasonable price for a 1 to 2 hour boat tour with other people on a small motor boat with a roof. She also showed us her and her husbands tourist license and their insurance... if a croc gets you I'm not sure how comforting this insurance will be but we thought it was very professional.
We had a great time on the boat, first we went round the water village and Wann pointed out lots of the different features of the village. Both Wann and Mark are very knowledgeable and we were able to ask lots of questions. Then we went into the mangrove forests, which is surprisingly not that far, here Mark and his well trained eyes spotted not only the proboscis monkeys, but many different beautiful birds, monitor lizards and crocodiles!!! They also have books on animals and birds so you can read about the wildlife you are seeing.
I would definitely recommend finding Mark and Wann for your boat tour!
WARNING: 2 girls on our boat booked the same tour through the Brunei travel agency and had to pay a lot more money (65 Brunei dollars each), they were also told many lies about the trip itself and about why we were paying so much less than them. We were offered 30 Brunei dollars for two people, which I think is very good value for what we got.
