“Practically perfect in every way”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 12 April 2012

Sometimes I wish Tripadvisor would allow each reviewer to give a 6 rating once in a while because this place deserved it, but as I can't do that, here goes ...

Greeted personally by the manager following a lovely 20 minute boat ride from the mainland. Taken by golf buggy, driven by our butler, to our secluded, private two-floor villa complete with plunge pool in front and walk down to the ocean. Everything immaculately presented. We had a lovely lunch each day, swam in the ocean, went snorkelling in the coral reef and relaxed in our personal pool. The whole thing does have a nature feel about it, there is something quite refreshing about showering in the open under the stars in the privacy of ones back yard!

Food was very good indeed, the chef and his team produced some great dishes, my favourite being the five spiced duck breast (will be requesting recipe from the resort). And it's not many places where if you want something specific making, the chef will do his best to get the ingredients and make it for you. Can't comment on the restaurant atmosphere as we chose in villa dining for breakfast and dinner and ate in the pool bar for lunch. The wine list in the main restaurant is the best one I saw by a mile in 3 weeks in Vietnam (and indeed many restaurants in the UK), with wines for every budget and style. They can deliver wines to your room for in villa dining, with appropriate stemware.

There were a couple of points on food service that could be improved, e.g. getting the ingredients for breakfast omelette right, sending enough butter with breakfast to the room (or on one day just forgetting the butter), making sure that a second bottle of the same wine is of the same vintage (I highly doubt we had the last bottle of 2009 Allan Scott) but nothing major and certainly not worthy of making a dent in this perfect experience.

As for price ... yes compared to the rest of Vietnam this place is more expensive, but it's also amazing, so you pay for what you get. Furthermore, it is nowhere near the prices for a city such as London, Paris or even western provincial towns. A main course is between £12.50 - £25. The Allan Scott Pinot Noir I mentioned was just over £30, which is a good price for a wine of that quality on a wine list and also not as expensive as other places in Vietnam that we stayed.

So as the manager, our butler and some of the team waved us goodbye as we sadly left the resort after three glorious days, we had already started planning our return visit later this year.

Only consideration for visitors which we weren't aware of before we went was how close you are to the wildlife. We had a bat flying around our room and a frog near the shower as well as moths and other such creatures. We read in the guest comment book that one room had a monkey visit them. For us that's fine and it added to the experience (we named the bat Geoffrey and the frog Alf), just something to bear in mind.

Dear AGFlint,

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such detailed review of your recent stay with us at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay and it’s great to read how you describe about our property and more importantly that you had an enjoyable stay with us thoroughly.

Thanks a lot for highlighting the shortfall regarding the breakfast and wine order. This will allow me to address the concern with the team and to avoid future recurrence.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Six Senses Ninh Van Bay or one of our other Six Senses properties in the not too distant future.

Yours sincerely,
Gary Henden

This was our 2nd visit to the Six Sense’s Ninh Van Bay and we stayed for 4 nights. We had originally reserved a hilltop suite where we stayed last time however, for some reason we were informed that we were “upgraded” to a beachfront pool villa. I would have preferred the climb to the hilltop and have a nice breeze, be totally isolated and have some outstanding scenic views but my wife was extremely pleased that we didn’t have to do the climb!

We were met on time at the airport and transported to the dock for the boat ride to the hotel. The new manager, Gary Henden (originally had misspelled last name), was also waiting for the boat to depart and we had the opportunity to have some discussions with him. After a short time two young girls joined us and we headed off for the 20 or so minute ride to the facilities. We were met on arrival by several of the staff including Gary Chan the F & B Manager, who was most helpful during our visit and our butler from last visit – “Thai”.

We were escorted to our villa by a golf cart and our butler “Thai” explained all of the necessary information about the villa. The villa was indeed luxurious and with a nice plunge pool at the front. The bathroom area was very spacious with an outdoor shower. At that time I requested that we be provided ice at 5 o’clock of each evening during our stay. Well, they made it 75% of the time as one night no ice was provided. The villa itself was quite protected by trees and was right near the beach front. It was certainly private however, we could easily hear the people from the villa adjacent whenever they were outside and talking and I am sure that they could also hear us whenever we were outside and talking.

On the evening of our fist night the hotel gave a “get together” party at just about sunset. It was nice and in talking with the GM, the Sports manager and our butler we told them each that we were going to be playing tennis the next morning at 0700 hours and we would appreciate water and towels being provided. We were promised faithfully by all three that such would be the case. On the next morning when we arrived at the tennis courts it was very wet as rain had fallen. No one had bothered to clean/dry the courts so I did the job. After drying the courts and playing for a while we took a break and we found no water and no towels were available in the cooler. For the following several days we found water on one occasion but no towels and on the next time towels but no water. So much for service at the courts!

Breakfast on each of the days we stayed at the facility was excellent with a very large array of both Asian and Western foods of high quality were available. Some of the dishes were prepared at request and each one we had was excellent. Service at the main restaurant and the poolside day restaurant was very good quality

After the first night the seas became troubled and bigger waves started crashing on the beach. It looked and sounded nice but it did limit the amount of time one could spend doing water sports or spend in the water. The weather also became cooler and we had more frequent rain for the rest of our stay which was unusual for the time of year. However, bicycles were available and there was also hiking to keep one busy, including tennis. It was interesting that there was a volleyball court available and when we asked about playing volleyball we were informed that we could play anytime. However, two people playing volleyball is not too exciting and rather difficult. There was no organized timing for people to get together and have a game. The last time we stayed here such organized sports were available but apparently for some reason such organized activities are no longer viable.

My wife and I were both surprised when on our last day a rather large tour group arrived for a two night stay. However, once they had lunch and were given villa assignments they were hardly noticeable. I didn’t realize that the Six Senses group had started accepting tour groups.

Upon the day of departure our luggage was collected, along with everyone else’s’ and we didn’t see it again until we arrived at the Ana Mandara Hotel (also a Six Sense’s property). Somehow one important piece of our luggage was missing. Now that’s another story that is reported under our review of our stay at the Ana Mandara hotel, Nha Trang.

In summary, the Six Sense’s Ninh Van Bay hotel is located in a very secluded and private setting; can be reached only by boat; and one can easily “chill out” with the sea at your feet. However, in my view, the hotel is beginning to get a “worn out” appearance and the service was certainly not up to the standards of a Six-Sense’s Resorts and Spas property and certainly for the price paid the quality was not there. Now the big question – “Would we return?” The answer, at least for my wife and me, is “No!”

Dear DIKTHAI,
We are very dismayed to hear of your disappointment upon your 2nd visit to Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. Firstly I would like to sincerely apologise for not meeting your expectations. Our mission at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay is to provide the best services and attention to all our guests during the entirety of the stay, regrettable this time we lacked consistency..
We wrongly presumed that the upgrade to the beach villa would provide you a better experience than your previous hilltop villa, this important point has been addressed to avoid future re-occurrence.
I am very sorry to learn of the poor and inconsistent service rendered at the tennis court and the ice, despite being promised on several occasions. Rest assured that these matters have been discussed with the concerned teams, in fact we have established new procedures and action plans to rectify these deficiencies. We are implementing a guest board where you can share information upon interests such as clubbable games (Volley ball, tennis, diving Etc..), thus encouraging more interaction..
Your experience regarding the misplaced luggage was indeed very concerning, we were grateful for your call so that we could also contact our driver who responded immediately to ensure your luggage was safely returned.
We really appreciate that you have taken the time to thoroughly describe your experiences during your stay, this attention to detail gives us essential information to immediately improve upon.
Once again please except our sincere apologies for these service lapses, I hope that we will have a future chance to regain your confidence in Six Senses Ninh Van Bay...

Yours sincerely,
Gary Henden

First: The breakfast was not like a 5 star resort
Second :The evening buffet not worth the money
Third: Air conditioning was broken, repaired at midnight
4th: The pool area was dilapidated, decayed wood
5th:: The FREE bikes broken
6th: too much environmental damage
7th The beautiful wooden tub was impossible to use
I would not choose this resort a 2nd time

We got only two night there but everything was amazing!
The resort is hideaway, we got a private villa with excellent service!
Expensive but worth to pay for!

Room Tip: Book the villa facing to the sea, it was great!

From our first interaction with this resort everything was handled superbly. The service was seemless, the food was fantastic and the accomodations were unparralleled. We showed up on their doorstep and thought we had reservations but found out that we had them at a different location - they were incredibly gracious and were able to move our reservations. Our beach villa was very large and had its' own plunge pool. By far one of the best features of this resort is the fact that you can elect to either be completely away from everyone (because the villas are carefully placed so that you do not have any visible neighbors) or you can mingle with the other guests at the pool or lounge. Additionally, the beach is great and the water is crystal clear. The staff were very attentive and the service was excellent at all venues. The only aspect that could be improved is that it seemed to take a long time to get drinks at the bar - never the less this is a small price to pay for perfection.
