“Love the Vibe”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 August 2012

Pham Ngu Lao is a ward or an area.
A backpackers area if you must.
The main street where all the activity happens is actually Bui Vien. It has a great tourist vibe to it. sidewalk cafes where you can grab half-a-dollar beers. Fruit shakes with actual fruit bits. Cheap authentic vietnamese food. Travel agencies, Hostels.
Stay here for a great Ho Chi Minh experience!

“BEWARE! DANGEROUS! Muggers and theives everywhere!”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2012

This place is great for coming for a drink and meeting some other travellers and to stay in a cheap guesthouse. But BEWARE!

In one week:
A female traveller was mugged in front of the hostel.
Two men on a motorbike tried to grab my purse while driving by. Luckily, the didnt succeed but I was punched in the stomach.
Another female traveller's purse was grabbed by two men on a scooter and she was dragged behind the scooter until the strap broke.
Two drunk men on a scooter hit our motorbike then proceeded to try and attack us while chasing us through the alleys until they finally crashed and we could get away.
Another traveller saw a fight between two Vietnamese, one stabbed teh other one and then left the victim in the street.

In all cases the police DID NOTHING AND DID NOT CARE!

So come down here for some drinks and fun but do not bring a purse and do not walk alone at night and exersice caution while on the scooter.

“The place to be - Pham Ngu Lao Street”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2012

One of the busiest and most happening place in District 1. Lots of hotels, restaurants, pubs and travel agencies. Hotels are cheap in this part and favored by backpackers

“happening place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 July 2012

this area is the best place out there as most hotels/hostels/tours/restaurants/pubs are located here and is very central to most city places...
in the evening the place comes alive as most pubs are crowded...........
its a very good hangout place and you can meet up with other travellers.........

“An amazing Street”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 July 2012

We stayed in a guest house along Pham Ngu Lao. As you walk around this street and the streets off Pham Ngu Lao you will find tailors, great food. Its a busy street with early morning markets, street vendors, chaos and serenity as people exercise across the road in the park. Night time is the best time to be around Pham Ngu Lao. The traffic is crazy. Love playing 'chicken' walking across the road during pan hour. The restaurants and the staff are friendly and inviting. You make good "friends" with the locals. Plenty of fun things to buy. The business end looks like most modern cities. Pham Ngu Lao is what makes traveling fun. Check it out
