This hotel was in an excellent location, the staff were helpful. but their english isn't all that good but their sister hotel around the corner called the Family Hotel ($15 a night) had a wonderful manager Perfume who helped us so much whilst in Hanoi. She helped us with our air tickets and anything we wanted to know she found out for us. The room was clean on arrival, they didn't do any room cleaning in the 4 days, they provided clean towels if we asked for them, but for $25 in a central location we got what we paid for. Breakfast was provided, bread/jam, noodle soup or omelette, tea/coffee and juice.

we had three days in Thuy Lam hotel. It is really good place: near by the Hoan Kiem Lake, Dong Xuan market, night market... very easy to walking, make photos, shoppings..
Resonable room rate includes breakfast, internet and The staff in there are very friendly and helful.
About services were very warming. we booked 2days/night in Ha Long bay and 3days/4night Sapa trekking in there. Very fantastic
We would like many tourist come to Thuy Lam
Thanks for everything

This place was, at the time, one of the better places to stay in Hanoi on a budget. Now it is not. Due to an accident that had me stuck in the hotel for over a week I got to know a lot of the staff very well. When we returned to visit again 18 months later we were informed that the place had lost a lot of it's charms. Rumours were rife about items going missing, bills doubling, etc. I have not been able to confirm these with any guests, but this is what the staff were saying. This might be due to all the staff moving off to work with the previous manageress at her new hotel.

  • Liked — It was good value for money
  • Disliked — Most rooms are "windowless wonders"

Despite what the hotel says in its description, breakfast is not included. We had to pay for breakfast. The rooms cost us $18 USD a night, and it wasn't worth it at all.

I stayed in three different rooms in Thuy Lam. None of them had functioning toilet doors. In one of the rooms we stayed in, we could hear the power generator giving off a loud BEEEEEP once every two minutes. We couldn't sleep all night. In two of the rooms, there were no proper electric sockets so we couldn't charge our iPods and phones.

The staff hog the 2 computers that are meant for guests. In the daytime, a young girl who works at the hostel spends all her time online using MSN Messenger and surfing entertainment websites. That's not a problem in itself, but when we asked to use the terminal, she made us wait ten minutes before logging off, and she only did that when her colleague walked into the room.

At night, some friends of the hostel's staff would drop by and spend the whole night playing online role-playing games. Again, not a problem in itself but when we asked to use the terminal, they made us wait half an hour before logging off. And these are computers meant for the guests, not the staff's work computers!

Location-wise, it's also not very good. It's at the very edge of the Old Quarter. A better place to stay would be Hang Bac Street or Ma May Street, where all the food and shopping are. It usually took us a ten-minute walk (given Hanoi's chaotic streets) before reaching any restaurants or shopping areas.

Overall, just don't stay here.

  • Disliked — The unhelpful staff, the loud beep that kept us up at night, the location
