Owner description: A rare breed of turtle enjoys this popular lake almost as much as countless locals and tourists. Hoan Kiem Lake is a dynamic daily tableau, from morning walks amid locals doing exercises on the shore, to young couples water-gazing on park benches, to the multiple shopping and sight-seeing opportunities in the vicinity. Centrally located in the city, Hoan Kiem Lake serves as a massive home base, and provides endless people-watching and recreational opportunities on the edge of the Old Quarter.

If anyplace could b considered the true hear of Hanoi it is Hoan Kiem Lake. The lake is surrounded by greenery and bounded by the Old Quarter and French Quarter. At night and on weekends the area around it becomes a pedestrian walkway where locals and tourists gather for music, dancing, kids activities and much more. It's friendly and family oriented. Always be aware of possible pickpockets, but that's probably the worst of it. Take the time to walk over and stroll the lake. It's nice break from the chaos of Hanoi traffic.

It is very nice to walk around the lake and see what is going on. Most likely you will see outdoor zumba style dancing, street games, and have students come and speak to you to practice their engligh.

As our guide would say: fairytale but logical!
See the big turtle and imagine there are several down at the lake.

Amazingly, the streets around the lake a blocked off and they manage to keep the scooters and taxis out for a short time. The result is a place where the locals promenade, eat, meet, play and simply enjoy the absence of traffic. Hawkers abound, but only seem to enhance the overall experience. If you are approached by a local who asks you to answer a questionnaire, you are not being scammed. They are students from an array of learning institutions, who are practising their English.

An icon of Hanoi, a must visit when in Hanoi or you are not in Hanoi yet. A lake with full of action and activities, with track circulating the lake and many open air park where the locals jogs, walk, tai chi session and line dancing at the park of its bank in the morning and evening. And in midday visitors start to arrive in bus load to visit the lake and the sacred Ngoc Son Temple over the lake link by the red bridge “Rising Sun Bridge”. For those who cannot walk long distance there is a shuttle around the lake on the tram for a small fee.
