This was a side tour on my third day in Ha Long Bay. This was a really informative tour the guide was clearly knowledgeable and seem passionate about pearl farming. The location is scenic. Products are available for sale. Looking back I probably should have bought something.

As part of our Halong Bay cruise itinerary, we were taken to a cultured pearl farm and were treated to an educational and interesting show-and-tell. How are pearls cultured? What are the differences between Akoya, South Sea, and Tahitian pearls? How long does the process take?
From the delicate and painstaking insertion of a grain of sand (acting as an irritant and nucleus around which the pearl forms) to the nerve-racking reveal (will there even be a pearl, and if so, does it meet the mark?), we come to understand what a laborious and time-intensive process it actually is. As only a small fraction of pearls make it to the display counter, no wonder the best ones can be pricey.
While none in our group bought anything from the shop (there is absolutely no pressure, by the way, which is nice), a friend who had visited before did buy something which he then had valued back home and it was found to be worth quite a bit more than he had paid for. So, for those who see something they like, you might be getting a very good deal.

A short visit, but educational. Just about every tour through Ha Long Bay will take you to a cultured pearl farm where they show you and explain how they go about culturing pearls. The visit as I mentioned is terribly short, as they seem more interested in getting you into the "gift shop", a floating pearl jewelry store. But as it comes part of the tour worth the time to visit.

We visited the Floating Pearl Farm as part of Cruise Itinerary. We saw how the local people produce the pearls & the whole process involved from the first stage of putting a stone/bone inside an oyster, to letting it grow for years, to the final extraction of the pearl. Our cruise manager even opened a live oyster in front of our eyes to show us the pearl inside. Last we had the option to browse through a huge showroom filled with pearls to be sold. Also at the start, we were told about different pearls, cultivation technics, how to value them based on colour, size, shape etc. The whole tour felt like a Discover/National Geography programme. This Pearl Farm Village was established in 1995 by a Japanese organization based on their harvesting technologies and years later transferred to Vietnamese.

I really enjoyed the tour, normally the option is between the pearl farm or kayaking, most of our cruise members went for kayaking, luckily I had done it a few days earlier so I opted for the new experience, totally worthwhile.

Take the time to learn the history and current process to cultivate pearls. Outside the sale room is a series of benches with workers who guide you through the process of the insertion of objects into the oysters through to the finished products. Ask any questions you like.
Then go inside and marvel at the magnificent displays of various types of pearl jewellery for sale.
Interesting place. Grab a bargain.
