Owner description: Situated in the centre of the UNESCO-declared World Heritage area, the Sung Sôt or Surprise Grotto is on Bo Hòn Island, and is one of the finest and widest grottoes of Ha Long Bay.Ascending to the grotto, the way is covered by trees and foliage, and consists of great paved stone blocks.Inside, it is partitioned into two chambers; the first one being similar to a wide theatre hall. Many stalactites hang from the high ceiling, with numerous possible forms and shapes.

“Surprise?”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 February 2012

Sung Sot Cave is known as Surprise Cave due to the reaction of explorers when they first visited it and saw a particular rock. To me the major 'surprise' was not the rock formation, but the horrendous lighting that entirely undermined the beauty of the cave. Lighting rocks green or red does not add to the aesthetics of the cave nor does it allow you a chance to admire the natural beauty unimpeded.

“average if you have seen other caves”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 January 2012

Too much grafitti, the attraction looked a lot like Jenolan Caves in the Blue Montains Australia to me. So many people even in winter, this is probably the only part of our Bhaya Cruise I would skip next time.

“Worth seeing”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 25 January 2012

The cave was the biggest we have been in. Interesting rock formations including the turtle where some people leave some money for luck. The different colour lights are a bit distracting with an unfortunate red spotlight aimed at a jutting pillar. Worthwhile seeing.

“Extremely Tacky!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 January 2012

Nice caves ruined but multi coloured lighting and added water features which really there is no need for this as they are quite impressive. There are alot of stairs involved so bear this in mind if travelling with elderly or very young. The bay would of been impressive but they are currently building on it.
