I booked a 2D1N cruise, they picked us up in the morning in Hanoi telling us that the day before the cruise has been cancelled, "but today this won't happen".

We travelled 4 hours in a minibus, and only as we arrived in Halong bay they told us that the cruise was cancelled due to bad weather, and that we had to pay anyways for the journey and the lunch. The choice was between staying in Halong at our cost or travel back to Hanoi. No further explanation given. As I was trying to have more informations about an alternative from our guide, his telephone rung and he just ignored me. He neither apologized for being so rude or for the trip cancelled.

We travelled then back in Hanoi, with an half an hour stop in a mall for tourists where a coffee costed 3 times more than in Hanoi. The same happened in the morning. At the end of the day we spent EIGHT hours in a minibus for no reason.

Could they not check the weather in Hanoi in the morning, and spare us the horrible journey? They said that they "had to wait for the 12 o clock forecasts", but hey, it's Vietnam, not the desert, I could see even on my mobile that it was windy and raining.

I had the feeling they wanted to just suck the money for the bus trip and the restaurant.

I would not recommend at all this company, it seems like a tourist scam.

We took the 2 day one night cruise with Oriental sails. We had booked the cruise through the hotel and we were met by the tour guide, Tommy, at the appointed time at the hotel lobby. He carried our bags to the van for the three and a half hour drive.
At Halong Bay, we waited at the Oriental Sails lounge for the rest of the passengers. the lounge is air conditioned, the rest rooms neat and we were provided with a cup of relaxing tea. The walk to the launch to the boat is about 50 metres and the staff help with your luggage.
On board, we assembled in the dining hall and were briefed on the safety aspects and the activities. The total group was 13. Lunch was served while the junk weighed anchor and commenced sailing in the bay. The dining hall is air-conditioned but a staff member opened the door and a few of the glass windows as there was a cool breeze blowing and it was more comfortable. The service was quick and the food tasty and well prepared. Dietary preferences collected by Tommy during the drive were catered for by the chef. In the twenty three hours that we spent on board we were served two lunches, a dinner and a breakfast. The food served included soup, seafood, chicken, beef and eggs; all well prepared and tasty.
The activities included a trip in a boat with a rower between the islands. that lasted for almost an hour or in a kayak for those so inclined, visit to a Prawn farm, spring roll making on board, karaoke after dinner, Taichi early morning and a visit to a cave that entailed a climb of about 30 metres.
The over 1600 limestone islets of Halong bay that cover an area of about 1500 square kms are a marvellous site. As one cruises at a leisurely pace in the placid waters with a cool breeze blowing, the best activity is to lie in a lounge chair on the top deck and take in the amazing sights and the serene atmosphere.
Tommy, our tour guide had an excellent knowledge of Vietnamese history and combined with his sense of humour, kept us amused and enthralled. He could converse on a variety of topics and tried to gauge each passenger's taste and likes.
The Junks come in different sizes. We enjoyed the cozy atmosphere on board with 9 cabins and a group of 13. The cabins are neat, beds comfortable, bathrooms neat and the air-conditioning effective. Wifi was available in the dining room and it was free. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend Oriental Sails for the comfort and service.

From the food being plentiful and delicious, to the beautiful scenery, to the kindest staff and guests one could ask for, this trip was one of the highlights of our time in Viet Nam. Not to mention, our tour guide Anh Bang (Bombom) was arguably the nicest guide ever. All this to say, we wish we had booked a longer stay on the cruise. Thank you for a great time!
