My husband, children (aged 5 and 9) and I all went on the 2 day (1 night) trip into Halong Bay on the Dragon Pearl Junk. Whilst I think such young children may not be an every day occurrence on the ship we were well looked after and the kids could do everything and get involved in the complete experience. The weather was unfortunately a little gloomy as a typhoon was expected in the next few days, but it didn't dampen the experience which was really fantastic. The scenery was just beautiful and the boat was great, with a wonderful range of food. We were all very well looked after. There were only 2 down sides, our children were a bit fussy and it did meant they didn't eat much on the cruise as the food whilst very good was completely Vietnamese (which of course is what you would expect), but we didn't have any other options to chose from to give them. The other minor issue was that I find some very small lice crawling in my sons bed and sheets. We don't know where they came from but when alerted the crew did change them very quickly. However it did not put us the wonderful experience and we did wish we were doing the 2 night tour in the end.

I put a lot of research into finding the right cruise for Halong Bay. One of the most important criteria for us was was that we wanted to sail into Bai Tu Long Bay, away from the masses of boats to get an more exclusive feel for the incredible landscape in the area. Indochina Junk, is one of the very few companies that offers the cruise into these hidden parts.

We went on Dragon Pearl for 3D2N and wish we could have explored for longer. To really get a feel for the beauty of the bay you need at least an overnight trip!
Everything was exceptional, the transfer from Hanoi, the water puppet show was fun to watch as well, the boarding of the junk was seamless and the junk itself was just how we imagined it. It was a traditional wooden boat, with just 11 luxurious rooms, which made it a more intimate experience than being on one of the larger, modern ships.
Food was served outside on the deck and was always deliciously prepared by the cook. Food allergies and special wishes were considered at all times.

The crew was fantastic, very friendly and helpful with our every request. The excursions by kayak were fun and the visit of the fishing village and the cave were a very interesting experience. One of the highlights of our cruise was definitely the barbecue on the beach.

I would highly recommend a cruise with Indochina Junk, talking to other travellers afterwards had very different experiences to us confirming that I made the right choice. We hope to be able to return one day to do one of their private cruises for longer...

We came away from 3 perfect days (2 nights) on indochina Junk's Dragon Pearl and haven't stopped thinking about it since. I don't think we could do it again because it couldn't possibly be as good. The dragon pearl is a beautiful vessel, and smaller and more intimate than other junks, making it much easier to get the know the other guests on board. There were 20 guests in total, and we all had a great time together. In many ways, the couples and families we got to know made the trip unforgettable for us. The Indochina junk company has access to areas of the bay that the other companies (except 1 other now) don't have access to. There are 600 boats at Halong bay and Indochina has a fleet of 14, so we never saw any more than 6-7 other boats at any time and we were always on our own when we had beach lunches, kayaking, visiting a floating fishing village or a cave. We felt like we had the bay to ourselves. The weather was great, the scenery breathtaking, and the staff on board, particularly Chung our tour guide, was exemplary. Everything was on time, well planned out, and it all worked seamlessly. If you want to experience Halong Bay in the best way possible, take the 2 night (3 day) tour on the Dragon Pearl, you will not regret a second of it.

My wife and I took the 3 day, 2 night cruise as part of our honeymoon, and it was absolutely brilliant! Ok ok, it does look a little expensive at first glance, but for two people with accommodation and three lovely meals each day, actually the price isn’t that bad at all.

The whole experience was brilliant start to finish; we were picked up in Hanoi, so a 4 hour journey to Halong Bay. That might seem like a long way, but when they pick you up in an air-conditioned luxury van with comfortable, spacious seats and wifi it was actually a very pleasant journey. We were lucky enough to only have four people in our taxi whereas I know some had six, but even with the latter amount there would still be plenty of room to relax and enjoy the view.

Once we got to Halong Bay, there was a little bit of faffing about and waiting for everyone to arrive and for the paperwork to be sorted, but not more that 40 mins or so. After that we were shown to our ‘carrier’ boat which took us out to the Pearl. The ship itself was brilliant; it was very clean, surprisingly spacious, and our room was comfortable with a private bathroom including a hot-water shower. The view from our window was superb, and the sun deck had plenty of loungers for everyone to enjoy.

Hung, our guide, was fantastic. His English was decent, and he spent careful time to explain everything to us including history and geography lessons about the bay itself. I had read a few reviews saying that the cruises are plagued with loads of other boats and rubbish in the water, but we soon found that this particular company pay extra for fuel and additional licences to allow us to spend most of the cruise in Bai Tu Long Bay as opposed to Halong. This meant that we could rarely see any more than one boat at anytime, and more often than not our views were completely unimpeded.

Hung arranged and coordinated daily activities which were exactly the right amount throughout the days we were there. This included kayaking, walking through a cave, and having lunch on a private beach, as well as free time to swim in the sea when the ship was anchored. The water was clean and cool (not that anyone can control that), and more importantly, the bar was always open with plenty of beer stocked up for the entire trip. We also stopped at the floating village which was really interesting, with a pearl shop at the end where I accidentally spent loads of money.

I don’t eat any seafood, because I’m a huge pain in the backside. But even though that was 90% of what everyone else had, the chef still made me generous helpings of alternatives, including beef, pork and chicken. I’m also about 80% sure I ate dog, which was pretty ruff.

We were extremely lucky in terms of the room we got (which was at the back on the side that no-one else would walk past), the other people on the cruise who were all lovely, the crew we got (including Hung who again was brilliant), and the weather. We had blue skies and sunshine until the end of the last day when the heavens opened and it rained none stop for several days. If any of those factors were different, it may have been a completely different story. But, fortunately for us, they weren’t, meaning we had an absolutely incredible time. Worth every penny, and a must do for anyone visiting Vietnam.

Between visiting Hanoi and Ho Chi Min City we stopped off at Halong Bay to have a one night stay on Dragon Pearl 3 a beautiful junk with a fantastic crew. Bui Van Uyen otherwise known as JD was our host on the junk and was very informative and friendly. It was so relaxing and the food was delicious. You certainly wouldn't go hungry. We visited a cave and a pearl farm and the scenery was stunning. If you ever go to Halong Bay and have a dive in the sea, can you look out for my son's expensive glasses as he dived in with them on and now there is probably a fish swimming around with very good eyesight.
