We had difficulty deciding which boat - a large vessel as opposed to a smaller one. In the end we decided smaller, and were happy with that decision. We were aboard with 16 other guests of varying ages for the three days. The cabin, the food, the escorted kayaking, the barbeque lunch on a quiet and clean beach were all highlights, along with the beautiful Bai Tu Long Bay. Each meal was served at lovely tables on the very pretty wooden deck of the Indochina Junk as we sat back and admired the rock formations. Everything was included except beverages, which were not particularly cheap! Party boats are becoming popular on Ha Long Bay, this Dragon Pearl was not one of them.

Occasionally, rarely, five stars is inadequate to rate a travel experience. It will deserve some additional recognition. So it is with Dragon Pearl Cruises which provides in every respect a superior travel experience beyond a five star rating.

We were recommended to this 3-day trip by a friend who had been very impressed a year earlier. It certainly didn’t disappoint. The cruise takes in a section of Ha Long Bay which is quieter and less travelled by tourist traffic, but no less spectacular. The views are terrific and the Junk just the right size for an intimate cruise. The onboard meals are excellent and it was encouraging to see conical-hatted fisherman sculling up to the boat to deliver live fish for the chef to prepare. The accommodation is fine, certainly if you book an upper deck cabin.

The cruise stops for a lunch on a deserted beach, visits a fascinating cave, there’s kayaking and, on the third day, I believe, a stop at a fishing village. I say ‘believe’ because at the end of our second day a fierce weather front was squalling in from the South China Sea and the bay was ordered cleared by the Coast Guard. It was then that the Dragon Pearl operators really showed their class: various arrangements were quickly established for the customers, including in our case being whisked back to Hanoi and, as our hotel had no vacancies, being booked into a fine hotel in the same vicinity. The apportioned part of the cost of the cruise was refunded to our credit card to the extent of the deposit, and the balance delivered to our hotel in cash.

Highly recommended.

We were met at the dock by our "Cruise Director" Kim. he was a funny guy that could command a crowd. We were helped on board and given welcome drinks and a rundown of the next two days.
As our boat was smaller than many of the others in the harbor we were able to go further, to more private spots which was great.
We had a few shore excursions to go caving, kayaking and to visit a floating fishing village.
The food on board was Top Class and plenty of it. Great cocktails too. We were in a great group of 17, all different ages and nationalities. After dinner we all went up on deck and played cards, it was so much fun.
Talking to some passengers of larger vessels back at the dock, I was very pleased we opted for a smaller boat.

Being locked into a fish diet wasn't appealing for my daughter so we opted for the one night cruising and one night home stay. It turns out that my daughter's dietary needs were thoughtfully considered and we really enjoyed the cruise around the islands. Mostly the organisation is first class but we did get caught out with our transport back to Hanoi. After a delay of over an hour waiting at a deserted puppet show, our driver finally arrived but had to make a quick 20 min break for lunch. During the wait, some other geezer was picked up by the company and he was comfortably accommodated in our seats when the driver ushered us back to the van - bum on one seat and feet on the other! It wouldn't have been so bad in the back seat had it not been for the dodgy suspension that bottomed out on every rise and the lounging geezer who also had his seat pushed as far back as possible for the two hour return ride. This was a situation where the driver should have intervened. However, frustrations aside, the home stay, about an hour out of Halong was a real joy. A private audience with a significant elderly resident, bike riding, catching fish waist deep in water the traditional way and even getting down on the ground to make brooms with a group of women. Get off the beaten track of boat dining, cave tours and pearl shopping with many other tourists and risk the immersion experiences available. Indochina junk delivered the goods with great itineraries, great local guides and tasty meals.

Everything about this 2 night cruise was fabulous. The staff on the boat were friendly and helpful. The relaxation and dining spaces and our room on the boat were lovely. The food was beyond amazing. The lunch on the beach with the boat in full rig in the bay was divine. Kayaking, swimming, visiting the cave and relaxing all made for a wonderful 2 days.
Best of all, I got to meet Ky amThe Phung, a wonderful Vietnamese flute player who is teaching Monkey (Dragon Pearl staff) to play the bamboo flute ( so he can play for the passengers, perhaps in the cave...which would be amazing!) Thanks for the flute - I'm still practising Tình ca Tây Bắc !
