Real old-school backpacker place in Chiang Mai. Most places are new and boring now but this place is the way I remember SE Asia! Best food around too, hands down! Huge portions made right! I had awesome fish and chips and the wife loved her pork knuckle as well. The owner is amazing too. Nicest guy you'll ever meet!

I loved it. Owner John will set up whatever you need while the Thai staff makes great meals (Thai or western, you must try the tomato or lime juice). Despite no aircon, the rooms were cool and I saw no mosquitos (despite holes in the wall). Houses are wood and rickety but kitsch and don't feel like they are on the road. Pleasant to have an afternoon drink in the restaurant. Showers were hot but pillows were hard, free slow computer, it's a balance, but budget travelers should like it a lot.

I have enjoyed visiting Chiang Mai numerous times since 1994, and each time I've stayed at the Pun-Pun Guesthouse. My room was bigger than most, and offered a queen sized bed, ceiling fan, and shower/water closet.
In addition, there have been numerous improvements since 1994. Owner and operator John Newchok is always eager to recommend onward travel plans, share the best place in town to have custom made silk shirts made to order, suggest Thai hot herbal massage services while staying a the Pun-Pun, as well as adventure treks up North. The Pun-Pun also offers an excellent canteena/pantry/restaurant on site, and their breakfast specials are super-sized (be very careful with the kryptonite coffee), and the very "BEST Stocked" Library in all of Chiang Mai and Northern Thailand. **An excellent value for those backpackers on the go!

Things to do and see in Chiang Mai: Hill Tribe handicrafts, jewelry, and antiques, the Night Bazaar, excellent opportunities in acquiring thai silk/cotton, gems, and gold/silver jewelry.

And for those who enjoy bicycle riding, one should try the Saturday morning Chiang Mai Bicycle Club bike ride.
It's an excellent way to experience all the sights, sounds, and smells of the city, while not getting overly tired and worn to a frazzle.

For my part, I enjoy hiking Doi Pui and early morning walks of the city streets, and meeting up with all the wonderful and friendly people who call Chiang Mai their home.
