“Oasis in Chiang Mai”
Reviewed 23 October 2011

From the moment we arrived, the staff treated us like visiting dignitaries. They were friendly, attentive and helpful. They went out of their way to make our stay a happy and comfortable one, even driving us to various city locations and giving us good local information.

The facilities are of very very high quality, the room, pool and restaurant were more than we expected for the price we paid.

The only drawback is that it's out of the hustle and bustle of town but on the other hand that is often an advantage as Chiang Mai can be a bit crazy at night. To help, the hotel offers a free shuttle into Chiang Mai twice a day and we could could return at our leisure in a local red cab for a few dollars. They also pick up and drop off at the airport for free.

They also offer free internt. The grounds were beautiful and we will definitely stay there again and I am missing lying around the pool drinking a Chiang.

We found this place online and based our selection purely on some pictures and a few reviews. We had thought from the map that it was closer to downtown than it was, but then realized that, because it was a bit further (actually close to the university) it allowed us the down time that makes vacations really restful. We happened to get there at a time that seemed to be low season, with few other guests. The staff, from the free pick up at the airport (about a 10 minute drive) to the final goodbye, was over-the-top friendly and smiley. Coming from Malaysia it initially gave us that "what do they want?" kind of feeling, but we soon remembered that we are in Thailand, where service happens with a constant smile and there is a genuine willingness to help and please.

The hotel is probably more expensive than many, and the staff was happy to recommend cheaper options (for massages, for example) outside as well, but it's small size was just what we needed for our family. Though not particularly 'child friendly' (we were on alert in the restaurant where their fans had plenty of space for a toddler to stick their fingers in), the staff loved our daughters!

There are shuttles to the city center or different parts of the city (varied depending on the day) allowing us a free ride into town each evening we were there. They also were extremely helpful in getting a taxi for us, by the day, to take us out of town to a number of different places we wanted to visit. Overall the hotel was a very pleasant surprise and we would happily return.

Room Tip: All the rooms we saw were with double beds. The bathrooms were lovely and large and everything had a...

The hotel was fantastic in every way. The friendly, helpful staff went out of their way to accommodate guests, offered advice for trips, gave rides into the old city and the night bazaar (which you must go to when visiting Chaing Mai) and looked after everything the guests needed. The hotel itself is really comfortable, pleasant rooms with air conditioning. Good sized swimming pool and adjacent bar area. Free internet access (if you should need it), free transfers into the old city (the hotel is about 10/15 mins away) and transfers to and from the airport. Also excellent if you've booked trips outside Chaing Mai (elephants/cookery/adventure days) as most offer transfers from the hotel inclusive. Would recommend to all and looking forward to going back on my next visit.

The Ayatana Hamlet really was a lovely hotel. It is small and very friendly where you will get to know the staff, who really are great. I managed to sustain what turned out to be a broken bone in my foot on my first day in Chiang Mai, and the staff did all they could to help me stay comfortable going far beyond what other larger hotels might have done. Everything at the hotel feels very Thai and authentic and this adds to the whole experience. The rooms are comfortable and well-equipped, and the pool is great for a dip to cool down after a day's sightseeing. There is free internet available in the lobby and a couple of free wireless hotspots but if you are looking for a bit of an escape, ditch the internet and just immerse yourself in the Thai culture! The location is not central Chiang Mai, but before you look elsewhere closer to the centre, there is a free shuttle service into the city in the morning and again in the evening. You can then just grab a 'red-top' taxi or tuk-tuk back at your own convenience for about 100-150 baht and stay as long as you fancy in the hustle and bustle in the centre. Food was good and compared to other hotels around Thailand we visited, very good value. Highly recommended!
