For years I've been coming to this part of Bangkok and wishing that someone would create a tasteful, comfortable guest house in one of the great old Thai houses that dot the wonderful, colorful and very authentic Samsen Road neighborhood. Samsen 5 Lodge has only three rooms--mine was beautifully designed (the owner is a young award winning architect), and really felt like a Thai home. Samsen 5 lodge is a great value--it costs about the same as the tacky, mid range shoebox guest houses down in Khao San and on Pra Artit road, but instead you get authentic Thai architecture and design and the intimacy of being a guest in a small cozy house. The best thing, though about Samsen 5 is that the owner, Worapan, really knows the neighborhood--he grew up nearby--and he can tell you how to find the best street foods and the most interesting markets and shops (he also unraveled for me the mysterious Bangkok bus system--by the end of my week stay I had stopped spending $$ on taxis and was confidently hopping on and off the public transport.)

I go to Bangkok often, but this has been one of my most satisfying trips to the city, thanks to Samsen 5 lodge.

A quiet and small guesthouse where is not far from kaoshan road. we stayed at room2 for 4 nights, Worapan (the owner) is a nice guy and always helpful.
Their breakfast was testy, which should not be missed, to start a beautiful day with their breakfast is necessary !!!
We got a lot of useful information from Worapan, It was so nice to know bangkok from him. he made our trip end up at great way.
We really like the decoration, it was the reason we chose this guest house, if you are looking for a cozy place with good location and nice people, here would be your best choice.

We really enjoyed our stay at Samsen 5. Worapan was always very helpful and accommodating - even going to the effort of buying a mosquito net for our baby girl.

The Thai breakfasts were an amazing variety of local foods as well as more Western style toast, coffee etc. and something we looked forward to every morning.

The hotel is really well located for the older part of Bangkok. There's easy access to the river taxi as well as Khao San Rd and the Grand Palace attractions. But best of all there are countless local street food vendors in the area where we ate some of the cheapest and best meals of the holiday.

The Samsen 5 Lodge is nicely situated on Samsen Road in the historical district of Banglampoo, within walking distance to Thanon Pra Athit, Chao Praya River, the klong taxis, Grand Palace, Khao San Rd. and so on. It' s a very nice place to stay in one of the most interesting and lively areas of Bangkok. The guesthouse is small and quiet, the tenant a young, very friendly local. I definitely recommend this place if you want to avoid the big mess of huge guesthouses full of drunken backpackers and are wanting to step aside the usual tourist trail.

Chose the place because I was looking for authentic but clean. The location is great, really near everything a first time tourist to Bangkok would be interested in. The service was excellent, very accomodating. They let us keep some of our bags at the hotel while we travelled to other parts of Thailand. Helped us get a cab by walking out into heavy traffic during rush our when no cabs wanted to take us to the airport for meter price. Were very, very good about our ever-changing travel plans. And the breakfast cooked by Worapan's aunt was absolutely incredible. Am very particular about living spaces, so the aesthetic of the rooms and the little garden just outside was a welcome breather from all the grime outside. The bed was huge and quite comfortable, we stayed in the Chinese Room. Not the cheapest place in the neighborhood but well worth the extra money, if you're a stickler for taste and authenticity. Didn't use the airconditioning at all, was completely fine with the fan temperature.

The only downside was finding one cockroach a night. But then again, stayed at another place in Koh Chang that had about 4 cockroaches per night, so the trade-off was ok. And that's really what you get when you stay so close to the street in South East Asia, especially in a tourist area near a river.

But there is no bigger cockroach-phobe than me in the entire world, I think. So if I say it's well worth the visit from a six-legged interloper, it's because I'm coming from a place in my head where paralyzing fear was totally conquered by nice deco, great food and really nice people. Just keep the bathroom door closed when you're not using it, I think they come from there somewhere.

The bathroom by the way was really nice, and I'm a stickler for non-seedy bathrooms. Everything worked properly. There are no pictures of bathrooms on the website, but rest assured it's at par with the way the rooms look.

There were comments about mosquitoes, didn't see, hear or get bitten by a single one.
