I stayed at the hotel for one night in the middle of July in a Standard Vista room on the 17th Floor. Let me start by saying the Hotel it’s self is truly excellent on all levels from the staff to design and it’s services. From my arrival to my departure I was totally impressed by this hotel. The reception is huge and airy despite the volume of people there always seems to be space. There is a real chilled out atmosphere in the whole hotel and nothing is too much trouble for the staff. I was checked in straight away with no queuing, the receptionist had superb English as did the rest of the staff. I was put on the Starwood privilege floor which was lovely and quiet. The design of the hotel is modern but with a mix of traditional Thai materials and culture such as silk freezes on the walls outside the door. The rooms continue this theme and are quite minimalist but with a mix of wood, silk and art work. You could tell that a lot of thought had gone into the design of the hotel and for me it really worked.
The room it’s self was 36m2 but is seemed much larger than that. This was helped by the floor to ceiling windows and bath room wall that could be opened to make the room open plan. The furnishings were first rate in terms of finish and standard and the room had a large Sony LCD TV with excellent channel choice. The bed was extremely comfortable and the quality of linens was out of this world, in fact the best I have ever had in a hotel. The bathroom was black marble and silver fittings with walk in rainfall shower and massive bath, I think there are some high end hotels in Las Vegas that would be blown away by the quality of the bathroom. It also seemed large and the amenities provided were quality. Loads of free bottles of water were provided and the coffee was filter had to be made using a cafétier. The milk however was still little pre-packaged pots rather than fresh which seemed a shame. I cannot fault the room one little bit and it exceeded my expectations which to be honest were already pretty high after reading other reviews.
I had the buffet dinner at the Recipe restaurant and at B500 per person the value was excellent. The theme of the Buffet was Asian style and everything was covered from Indian to Sushi. The quality of the food was outstanding as was the moody setting of the restaurant. I would recommend a visit to the buffet in it’s own right even if you are not staying at the hotel. Check out was smooth and a Meter taxi was called and my bag put in it even before I walked out of the door. The overall rate I paid was just awesome at half the usual rack rate and this offer was available at both agents and the hotel website. As far as the hotel is concerned they didn’t put a foot wrong and the facilities, building and staff are truly exceptional.
But there’s one key thing that I have not mentioned which needs to be factored in when deciding weather I would stay her again, location. The hotel is situated right in the middle of Patpong which for those people who don’t know is a famous red light district. It also has a famous night market which they set up on the road between the gogo bars. To say it gets busy after 6pm is a big under statement, it’s like a football match finishing and everyone heading for the exit. The problem is the best way to the sky train is that very same street and while the red light district didn’t bother me the hassle of fighting my way through it did. It is also probably a little bit further from the sky train station than I would have liked. Through the day it’s a 10 min walk at night is an expedition! The thing is as someone who has stayed on Sukhumvit rd for years it was a bit of hassle I’m just not used to. So maybe its me being set in my ways, even so I have to say I prefer being located on Sukhumvit but that is just my personal preference. You are only a few minutes away from Silom road, Siam and the big shopping malls are only 2 stops away on the Sky Train and the MRT is a sort walk away. The trip to and from the airport is not too bad with the exit to/from the expressway only 2-3 minutes drive away.
Top and bottom of it is if the rate is good then I will give this hotel another go, and maybe for longer to get to know the area a bit better. The quality of the hotel is such that it is worth a little more inconvenience than maybe I’m used to get to stay at this great hotel, it really is that good! As the title says maybe ‘its not the hotel it’s me‘.
