“Nice enough but there's better in Taipei”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 13 January 2010

There's actually nothing wrong with the hotel. It's clean, staff are helpful, and about a 20 minute walk to Ximen and 10 minutes to Zhongshan. If it was my first trip to Taipei I would have probably been impressed but I've had better in this city.

You have to pre-order the type of breakfast you want the night before - choice of American, Taiwanese, Japanese. It was included in my room rate but I woke up too late each morning as the bars and clubs in Taipei are so good!

The bed was OK but fairly flimsy pillows and only one tiny wardobe in a triple room. Hotel had free wi-fi. Best part, as other reviewers noted, is the bathroom. Nice jacuzzi style bath and decor. Free bottled water and tea/coffee in the room as well.

Maybe 3 stars is a bit mean but it's just a comparison!

It was the second time we stayed here in Taipei. The Royal is well-maintained as usual where you could enjoy the jacuzzi .The location is not close to subway but it is still within walking distance (15mins).

In particualr, I also tried the newly opened Beitou hotel where transfer service could be arranged by hotel. Hence, it was really convenience to enjoy the Beitou spring. Dont forget to try the set lunch/dinner at Beitou as it was really great.

Special thanks to Barbara of Season who provided a great help in room booking.

Stayed as part of a tour group. Hotel seems somewhat out of place - some of the surrounding area was fairly dumpy. Hotel is small. Someone said there are actually 2 hotels right across from each other, so it may depend on which one you get.

There were only 4 or 5 rooms per floor. Fairly roomy and nicely appointed, if a little "old school". Hot water pot, tea service, and small refrigerator. Small armoire, Flat screen TV with a handful of English channels. Ours had a jacuzzi tub with separate shower. Nice toiletries. The room next to ours had a triangular shower that could fit 10 people easy (they were on the end of the building). For once, reasonable light for reading - side table as well as overhead lighting on both sides of the bed.

Breakfast was preordered (choice of American/eggs, Chinese/jook, Japanese, or Taiwanese/beef noodle soup). The beef soup was good, but needed the chiles to perk it up. Nice beverage bar with variety of juices and cofee options. Breakfast was served on the 12th or 13th floor, but the elevator only goes to the floor below that, so you have to climb one flight of stairs. One guy who confirms your order and runs back and forth delivering trays to the tables. He was very nice, but very busy.

Two computers in the lobby with reasonable internet access. Fitness room and shower downstairs.

We didn't stay here long due to the itinerary. The staff were nice, but not necessarily outgoing. Limited Engish abilities, but we had a guide that was fluent so it didn't matter.

It was fine for our limited use, but if you are exploring on your own, you could probably find a better location.
