“Great location, ace service, super value”
Reviewed 6 March 2012

Location - slightly west of Thamel, therefore quieter location, minor distant noises of dogs during the night. Many sights, restaurants and supply shops/laundry are within a short walk. We were charged for airport pre-paid taxi service. Although Madhuban do offer a pick-up, a service we could not access as Agoda do not provide their email address. Safe and secure - one entry point manned 24hours and guard on gate. Room size - large room with balcony, Room facilities/power - wardrobe, desk, mirror, TV, 3 power sockets in room and one in attached western bathroom. Room had seating area with coffee table and large bed. Mattresses/pillows in Nepal are hard and take some getting used to. Power cuts are frequent so check with the staff as to the best time for hot water, they have solar and back-up electricity systems (leave the shower running for 5 minutes first). Room is cleaned when key is left at reception. Reliable wi-fi. Breakfasts/Food - simple breakfast was included in the Agoda price of per night. This included toast with jam and butter, tea or coffee and two eggs made whichever way you wished. We were able to swap for an Indian breakfast one morning. Service - friendly and helpful but not pushy. Arranged taxis for us to the airport as our luggage was missing. Also arranged our trip to Chitwan at market price (independent travel is cheaper, however). Tip: Ask for load shedding (power cut) timetable and carry a torch.

Room Tip: Rear and upper floors are quieter.

For me, Madhuban Guest House was not about a place. It was about a person named Laxman - the simple looking, ever-smiling man who runs the show. Right from my arrival in Nepal till my return, Laxman was there.

When you come to Madhubhan, you can be assured that rest of your trip can be planned and arranged there itself, as Laxman has a Travel and Tours business as well. My stay in Pokhra, tickets, taxi, all was done at Madhubhan, and at a good price.

Coming to the stay part, Madhubhan is simple, clean, no-frills guest house where basic needs are well taken care of. Staff comprises of few people who are warm, welcoming and helpful. A boy named Raj walked with me for over 30 mins all through the market to help me find an ATM where my card could work. Thanks to him.

The room i stayed was Rs. 750 a day, and trust me, it was quite spacious for its price. Carpeted, two single beds, a cupboard, a TV with cable connection, and an overlooking attached balcony. Beds were clean and comfortable as well. Of course there was a attached bath. Only little prob I encountered was hot water was not that hot one morning, as a large group of tourists staying had used up a lot of pre-heated stored water early in the morning, and solar heaters were not of much use as the previous day had been cloudy. But they promptly arranged for 2 buckets of piping hot water.

Laxman has his own car and the guy behind the wheels is KUMAR, who ferried me to places at a nominal cost. On the day when I took the Mountain flight, and when i was returning from Pokhra, Kumar patiently waited for me at the airport for hours, as the flight got delayed due to poor weather.

Madhubhan mostly has foreigners as guests and less of travellers from India/neighbouring countries. That is one reason, the bathrooms have fittings which suit more to foreigners. Like, apart from washbasins there are no other taps. Only showers for bathing, and no separate taps. But that's really not a thing to bother as, the shower has a mix of hot and cold water. And if u want a bucket and a mug, u just ask and they will provide. Moreover, Laxman has promised me that he will get the taps fixed, so more guest like me can come. I hope they will be there when i come back to Madhuban next time for a trekking trip.

For the location, Madhuban is located in Thamel, and you can easily step out, shop around and walk back. There is a computer with internet available and accessible to all right at the reception.

Overall, its an honest place, with simple, sincere people and offering a clean stay at a very reasonable price. I personally feel, you don;t need to spend too much on a 'luxury' place as Nepal is about going out and exploring. So Madhuban is one of the best choices to stay in Kathmandu.

If u reading this review, thanks for a great stay Laxman, Tarun and everybody else. Looking forward to visit again.

Room Tip: The corner room on 3rd floor has a nice balcony and on the 4th floor, there is terrace.

Kathmandu Madhuban is best choice to be in Thamel but far from noise of Thamel. A clean, comfortable and friendly place to stay in Kathmandu. I stayed with family for 4 days where Mr. Tarun helped me from picking up to day sight seeing and Nagarkot trip as well. Everything were nice with reasonable pricing. Rooms are spacious, neat & clean and equipped with most needed hot water facility. It is also near to Kathmandu Durbar Square, only 10-15 minutes walking distance. People at Kathmandu Madhuban are really polite and helpful. Especially, Mr. Tarun who really assist me well for my tour. Thanks Tarun!!

I recommend everyone who is travelling solo or family, Kathmandu Madhuban is best place to stay.

Star rating in Kathmandu isn't quite like star rating elsewhere. The one star of Madhuban Guesthouse is brighter than many of those of their multi-star competitors.

The hotel is located within comfortable walking distance of the Durbar Square - as well as the multitude of restaurants in Thamel without the noise.

The room (we stayed in a suite on the fourth floor) was large and clean with a double bed, nightstand. closet, desk, chair, television, coffee table and two armchairs, the latter of a somewhat spartan variety. As we learned was the custom in Nepal, the mattresses were fairly hard - but for trekkers, used to sleeping in tents, I suppose that doesn't matter much.

It has a nice rooftop terrace where you may take your breakfast and five star staff keen and able to assist with anything you might require.

Room Tip: Stayed in a suite on the fourth floor and believe this to be among the better rooms.
