This is one of the nicest places you can stay in Kat, unless you're the Hyatt and Ritz type, and it's reputation for quiet and great service is well deserved. The city is a dizzying mixture of noise, pollution, people and vibrancy, and any opportunity to enjoy an oasis of calm is greatly appreciated. The power outages were hardly a factor during our stay, and did not last long. It actually adds an element of intrigue and character to the Nepal experience.

The great benefit of staying here however, is that it is owned by the same person that owns Explore Nepal, an exceptionally high quality and respected national travel agency. I used them continuously throughout my trip, especially after leaving Kat. Their regional manger, Mr. Karki, worked hard to secure great accommodations, rafting tours, airline tickets, etc. at prices that were lower than otherwise advertised. It became clear after only a few days that a call from Explore Nepal to anywhere in the country got results. This group is a major player in the tourism segment of Nepal and having a friend in some of the more outlying areas is, believe me, a great relief.

My 3-day stay in the Kantipur Temple House Hotel was ideal, and not just in terms of location. Sited just 50 meters or so from the old city in an area that seems to be being redeveloped, walking around the main sights is simplicity itself, provided you have a reliable map! The hotel calls itself a “boutique” hotel. Whilst it does not provide the degree of luxury usually associated with hotels bearing such a description (e.g. no shampoo or hairdryers in the bathroom), it is a comfortable residence with many plus factors. The design is distinctly Nepalese with a small but pleasant garden leading to the main lobby. Rooms are on 5 floors and there is no lift, so ask for a lower floor if stairs present a problem. My bed was hard, which I like. The ample-sized room had two comfortable chairs, a dressing table and plenty of storage. Above all, it was quiet and isolated from the considerable activity in the streets. Like gasoline, electricity in Nepal seems to be permanently rationed with power cuts of 2 - 3 hours each evening; yet the shower provided plentiful hot water – even by candlelight. The hotel provides itself on being eco-friendly. Fresh drinking water is placed in flasks in the rooms each day. Plastic bags and plastic bottle are discouraged. In the restaurant, all ingredients were fresh and I enjoyed three really excellent dinners.

The hotel advertises wireless internet, but this only works – and then rarely – in the garden! Yet, the only real drawback is for those sensitive to noise, for each floor has a service room close to rooms 1, 2 and 3 (mine was #3). The constant ringing of the telephone could be heard quite clearly.

This place was lovely. The building is beautiful, the garden and roof-top are really nice to chill out away from the madness of the city, the staff were very friendly and attentive, the room was great. This was far nicer than any other hotel I stayed in while in Nepal and of an excellent standard compared to others. I would highly recommend it.

It is a wonderfully quiet escape from what is a very noisy city. I couldn't hear any car horns, which was a real treat compared to most hotels I visited. Even though it is so peaceful, it still has a convenient and central location, easy walking distance from the main tourist areas. I would only suggest bearing in mind that it's not somewhere I would have liked to walk to alone after dark, as the quiet location involves being down a somewhat deserted side street. Not a problem but just to be aware of that.

I was a little put off by some other reviews talking about being plunged into darkness for several hours. I assume these are out of date. Power cuts are a daily occurrence in Nepal but when I was here this hotel, like the others, did have back-up lighting and so the main light in my room and bathroom still worked. Please don't be put off by any of the previous reviews about hours of black outs.

The restaurant was very good too.

Starting from the complimentary airport pick up through to the personal greetings from the hotel owner, our whole stay was a positive, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable experience. It is so close to the main shopping areas of Thamel without any noise or hassle. Everything is conducted in traditional Nepalese style but at the same time catering for the typical needs of international travellers. We will definitely go back and recommend the hotel to anyone!
