Crowne Plaza Kathmandu-Soaltee
Ranked #53 of 209 Hotels in Kathmandu
Reviewed 12 July 2011

I spent an amazing three nights and four days in Kathmandu and at the Soaltee Crowne Plaza hotel while visiting with friends. We went up for a two day trek and my friends family stayed at the hotel (and got spoilt rotten too) while we walked. They spent the two days being taken shopping and lounging by the huge pool. We all arrived on Friday afternoon and were immediately welcomed by the team there like warm friends. We were upgraded into suites and the extra space was amazing and the rooms were very well furnished. Quite modern yet still traditional Nepalese style. While I was walking I was able to keep the room so I didn't need to pack and unpack after we got back which was a huge help also. On arrival back on Sunday we re immediately looked after again and things like laundry for trekking gear and getting our boots cleaned were all taken care of while we had a cold beer at their alfresco bar... bliss at that stage! We were taken to some great bars and restaurants as well while there but the food was pretty good at the hotel. I didn't get to try the Chinese or Italian but the menu looked pretty good so maybe next time. Definitely next time I will bring the family back with me and we will stay for longer so we can try out all the hotel has to offer.

We stay at the Soaltee for 4 days. Its a very nice hotel with spacious rooms and huge garden. The building is a bit old but well-kept, although personally I think renovation of the rooms are needed if it needs to compete with the Hyatt. The location is nice and quiet, but quite far away from the busy parts of the city, so if you want to eat outside you'll need to go by car. The food from the various restaurants are acceptable though - the Chinese restaurant is especially good. While we were there the city has a shortage of electricity supply and the hotel's generators would kick in every few hours. The rooms facing the back yard where the generators were could get a bit noisy.

WiFi are charged at around USD20 per day, if you don't need a lot of data download you can get a pre-paid phone card if you have a GSM smart phone.

Room Tip: Try to get a room facing the front garden!

The hotel has already embarked on a major renovation for both the front and back of the house to enhance the guest experience. In the first phase, already underway we shall have a new coffee shop operational by mid September. In the later stages of the renovation we shall be doing the Himalayan Wing rooms, Conference facilities and the lobby.

Look forward to welcoming you back to Soaltee Crowne Plaza Kathmandu on your next visit to Nepal.

Pros;
Courteous and helpful staff; great room service as well as housekeeping; good swimming pool; decent food options available on property

Cons:
Cigarette smell even in non-smoking rooms, away from the touristy action and commuting during rush hour can be a pain, casino is no more operational

We would like to thank you for your stay with us and your feedback, which go a long way in maintaining our hotel standards and services.

The Casino Nepal housed in the hotel premises is going through some severe labour issues and hence is not operating to minimum acceptable standards. Till this issue is resolved we have made alternative arrangements at another casino for all our guests along with transportation facilities.

Look forward to welcoming you back to Soaltee Crowne Plaza Kathmandu on your next visit to Nepal.

We finally booked this hotel for our 4 day stay in Kathmandu after going back and forth between this and the Hyatt. We heard Hyatt is a little further from the main city thus decided to go with the Soaltee.

Let me start with the positives. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, the hotel is close to Thamel (the main tourist market) and the overall stay was very comfortable.

The overall property though seemed to be slightly unkempt, and definitely not 5-star variety. We opted for the club room, which is supposed to be one of the best in the hotel but the room was very small! The Casino Nepal was open for a couple of hours in the night and even then only 2 tables were running.
