great location, professional service, good level of English, excellent food (à la carte).
rooms - better ask for deluxe room : nicer, biger ad cosier
avoid the buffet dinner, it is nothing special. whereas i would suggest è la carte menu. they have excellent choice of bhutanese and indian food. usually if you have "all inclusive package" à la carte is included (bu check first!)

Room Tip: deluxe rooms or suite are excellent

Druk Hotel has excellent location at Clock Tower Square, the epicenter of Thimphu, close to everything. The recently renovated rooms are beautiful and have every amenity, though the older rooms are pretty good as well. Hotel can now compete with Taj Tashi, but at fraction of the price. Staff are friendly, efficient and helpful. Breakfast could be better, (more options, nicer presentation) though is adequate and there is plenty to eat. Because of ongoing renovation there is some noise during the day, but not at night and fitness center and bar not open during renovation. I visit Thimphu 3-4 times per year, and this is my first choice for accommodation.

The hotel is being renovated, and the newly appointed rooms are delightful, perhaps even dramatic. Others in our group got older rooms and were not as pleased as we were. A sign on our large windows warned us not to open them because of the bees' nest outside. (It was huge!) Bhutan is a Buddhist country, after all, and all living things deserve respect. Part of the charm. The hotel is on the city square, with dozens of shops nearby for both tourists and townspeople; a perfect location.

Room Tip: Be sure to get a renovated room facing the square.

After a week in Bhutan where we 'calibrated' our expectations for hotels to the point where a decent meal and hot water were a welcome treat, we came upon the Druk. Hallelujah! How is it that this hotel is only rated #4 in Thimphu? Not for long, we bet! The 35 refurbished rooms (red, gold and green) are all the same 'except for the color'. Ours was green and it was fantastic. We had a claw foot tub, separate shower, terrific bed and pillows, hardwood floors, large flat screen TV, wifi throughout the hotel with good bandwidth, and a view of the clock tower. Very chic. Another review said that the restaurant was just 'average' but we beg to differ. There was a wide range of choices from Bhutanese, Cantonese, Indian and Continental, and all was made to order a la carte. We had wonderful made-to-order won ton soup and momos for a snack. Now for the potential complaints: The bar was closed for renos when we visited (too bad), but we could order alcohol in the restaurant and were allowed to take the rest of our bottle to our room. Another review complained about the dogs barking at night, but having stayed elsewhere in Thimphu, this cannot be avoided. (The Bhutanese apparently believe that dogs see and protect against evil spirits so a large number of stray dogs are found throughout the city). The most appreciated asset at the Druk was the customer service and smiles throughout the hotel...sad to say, that is a rare thing in Thimphu, but not here. Its central location is a real boon. We highly recommend the Druk and wish we had found it earlier in our trip. (See my separate review of the Namgay Heritage Hotel).

Room Tip: Definitely choose one of the refurbished rooms, ideally facing the clock tower. A few of the corner rooms in the back have a huge bee hive outside the window...there are warning signs about this but it might be a little creepy for some guests. We didn't mind because the pacifist approach to dealing with this natural phenomenon was typically Bhutanese. And it was actually fun to watch.

The Hotel Manager Mr. Dilu Giri really tries to make you feel at home. He helps everywhere. If your iPhone or laptop has to be connected to the wifi or if you would like to read a book about buddhism (free issue in every room!). He is also keen to learn how things can even be more improved.
The rooms, newly renovated, are very clean and nicely decorated. Having a good sleep in a very comfortable bed and in marvelously cosy linens.
The restaurant with asian and continental cuisine is also highly recommendable.
With Mr. Dilu Giri as Hotel Manager the Druk Hotel Thimphu is on its way to become a 5 star Hotel.

Dear Guest
Thank You for your review and your personal note. I would like to be of assistance to everyone if and whenever possible as i truly believe that every guest is special and when they go back home they should remember us for all the good things we did for them. My personal motto has always been" A smiling and a well taken care of guest is a true blessing".

We here at The Druk are really working hard to achieve the above.
