Don't expect a five-star hotel from Hawthorn. The rooms are a bit shoddily built, the restaurant is just OK, and the facilities are just sufficient. (Try the Hilton Abuja if you're going for more upscale.) I've stayed at the Hawthorn on business several times, however, and I've come to expect friendly and helpful staff who recognize me (a novelty in Abuja); an EXTREMELY comfortable bed; a fair (and negotiable) room rate; and a decent pool and work-out space. I've grown quite fond of the Hawthorn because of its wonderful staff and it's record of being a reliably OK hotel. I have always felt very safe at the Hawthorn, in part because most of my colleagues prefer to stay at the Hilton - in other words, the Hawthorn is not so likely to be targeted as a Western hot spot. It's also gated and has (decent-ish) security. Other perks include being next to a grocery store and about one block from a STELLAR Indian/Pakistani restaurant. On the downside, the internet only really works in certain rooms. You can ask to be moved if you're having a major issue with it. Also, the showers are extremely complicated (seriously) and the quality of materials used to build the rooms are a bit poor.
