We are on day 4 of a short break. I can honestly say I cannot understand the negative reviews of this hotel. It is as good as any 3 star I have visited and better than some. Very conveniently situated between Vilamoura Marina and Quarteria.
Hotel very clean and modern. Breakfast good. Staff helpful. Very pleasant break.

I stayed here because the place I usually stay at (Hotel Santiago just around the corner) was full. Santiago is hardly my favourite hotel, having various issues, but it outshines Hotel Sol.

So, the good: Hotel Sol is clean, and has plentiful hot water. The AC works well. That's about it.

The bad: not one of the staff members speaks either English or French (unlike the santiago, where most speak one or both), so comms are difficult if you're not Lusophone.

The rooms, whilst acceptable/functional, are very old and dated, and the bed is small. The toilet (in my room at least) didn't flush properly. There was also a very weird light fitting in my room - a bulb on a wire extending down from the ceiling to about 1 m away from the floor, right in the middle of the room in front of the desk. There is nowhere sensible to put ones suitcase. The lift outside the room made a lot of noise.

The breakfast is miserable, and the breakfast restaurant is equally miserable and drab. No outside space is available.

Finally, and worse of all for me, the internet is basically unusable. Overall, it's ok at a push, but you'll be far better of at the Santiago.

We spent Christmas and New Year hear and had a great time, all the staff were very helpful and the entertainers were superb. This is a lovely hotel but if you have walking difficulties this is not the place for you unless of course you have a buggy. Food excellent, pool excellent, room excellent and facilities great. We were a party of 3 generations from four years to sixty five and all had a wonderful time.

The Sol Hotel is a modern establishment located in Achada Santo Antonio, a quiet neighbourhood. To the Plateau is a 15 minute walk or a short taxi ride. Staffs are friendly and attentive. Complimentary Wi-Fi. Free parking in front of the door.

Our non-smoking room had AC and a good double bed. The adequately decorated room had a desk & chair, flat screen TV, wardrobe plus safe & fridge, and a separate bathroom with washbasin, shower & toilet. All was very clean.

Windows can be opened. The back side rooms face a tiny inner court of 5m2. It is more a funnel for air and light. Here you find all noisy AC devices. Better have a room at the street side. The buffet style breakfast is unimpressive.

We would recommend this hotel to anyone who seeks an OK sleep in a modern accommodation.

Room tip: Frontside rooms have more fresh air
