I do not like giving a "poor" rating to the Russell Hotel because all the staff are helpful and considerate, but since my last visit in 2016 the hotel has deteriorated due to lack of maintenance. The upgraded room I first stayed in had numerous faults, most of which were attended to, but the main problem with this room and another standard room I later used is the intermittent water supply. Everyone is aware of the unreliable municipal water supply which often has very low water pressure, and so most hotels have installed a bore hole as a backup supply. The problem with the Russell is that the water pressure fails often at the most inconvenient times, and I then had to go to reception (sometimes during the night) to ask them to turn on the water pump for the bore hole. Apparently they do not have an automatic system for this. This problem needs to be fixed as a priority, but lack of funds might be an obstacle.
Despite these difficulties, the Russell offers a homely environment at a modest room rate of $47 including an adequate but somewhat spartan breakfast. But for this ancient traveller I would like a hotel room which provides a constant water supply, and for this reason prefer the Baines Bed and Breakfast hotel nearby which is $60 for a single room, including a good breakfast.
For the infirm, please note the lift was not working on my latest visits to the Russell spanning 2-weeks.

I just want a clean and functional hotel room and the Russell fits the bill. Large four roomed superior room has lounge with flat screen tv (but only four channels), coffee and tea making facility, bathroom with bath without shower, free Wi-Fi. Room price includes a good breakfast. Very friendly and helpful staff. Low water pressure in Harare sometimes causes problems.

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the Wi-Fi router for stronger signal

I stayed here with my team a couple months ago to finish a work contract. This place fit the budget, the rooms are big, clean and the staff are friendly. A restaurant that serves some pretty good "peri peri" chicken and curry just dishes located downstairs, and some take-out places a block or so away. Not a bad view from the room, well, for Harare anyways! The place felt pretty safe for the most part, couple of guards downstairs and a private garden with pool :). Not bad at all!

Room Tip: Something on the 3rd Floor
