A wonderful place to visit. Although on the outskirts of Marrakesh they offer a free shuttle service for day trips and reasonable taxi fares (with collection) in the evening. The fact it is outside the City is a blessing as it is so peaceful.

My boyfriend and I have just got back from a long weekend at Kasbah Dar Ilham. The hotel is about a 25min car journey from the airport and about 20mins from the centre of Marrakech. After a bit of an iffy taxi ride to the hotel (because we stupidly didn't pre-arrange our transfer with the hotel - which they would have provided free of charge if we had got in touch with them!) everything went perfectly for the rest of the weekend. All the staff were very friendly and attentive and spoke really good English. We really liked the fact the hotel was out of town and relatively small - we felt very looked after and it was lovely to relax in the gardens and cosy dining room after a hectic day in town. Also, the hotel provided a free taxi serivce to and from the centre of Marrakech so we really didn't feel like we were missing out at all. I really couldn't recommend Kasbah Dar Ilham more, it was a lovely weekend and the perfect place to relax.

My husband, our young children (5, 2, 1 yrs old) and myself visited Morocco and had the pleasure of staying at the Dar Ilham this past December 2011. It may have been daunting for others visiting Morocco with young children but we wanted somewhere warmer than the UK, somewhere very different and not a long flight from the UK (only 3 hours). My husband and myself had previous experience visiting other very different countries compared to the UK and US so we knew “kind of” what to expect and went prepared. First on the location of the Dar Ilham as it was great if you wanted to get out of the loud yet vibrant city of Morocco since the Dar Ilham is situated about a 15 or 20 minute drive outside of the main city. It was not bad of a drive at all. The only bad thing about the drive was there was only select times you could take the sponsored “shuttle” which was twice a day; in the morning and then the last being at 6 pm. Anytime in between or after that you would then have to pay a steep 25 Euro to go into the city or come back later if you wanted to stay and enjoy the nightlife. AND because almost no one took credit card or debit cards, your cash went really quick. You just have to plan your trip well in advance.

Onto the Kasbah and Riad. Over all, it was like staying at a small resort with family running it. We loved our stay and made amazing memories. We stayed in the Agadir room and my parents joined us mid way and the staff went out of their way to welcome them and upgrade their room at no charge to the one next to ours. The staff was very courteous and loved playing with our kids. The rooms were traditional, comfortable beds and with most of what you need. It may be a bit darker in the bathrooms than what most are used to but it’s part of the charm. The grounds and building were kept very clean, organized and was really beautiful. It has a nice reading room where you could have a drink, smoke a shisha, read or watch a movie from their library of movies from around the world or mainstream. The kids loved it since it was empty at times and they would encourage the kids to run around and play hide and go seek. They were lovely to them. Although they had a beautiful heated pool and the weather was nice during the day in December, the pool was still too cold to enjoy a nice swim, BUT they were nice enough to let the kids swim in the “adults” only Jacuzzi during the day when no one was using it. The gardens surrounding the buildings were beautiful and you could smell some of the orchard. The outside seating area was nice and varied in the sun or in the shade. They would welcome you by sitting you outside on their beautiful shaded porch with the traditional mint tea while the bellman took your bags to your room (no lifts but it is only 2 floors). The food was traditional, excellent and in abundance yet pricy. The only negative I can say is that you have no choice but to eat at the Dar Ilham with a set price and set menu with no choice of what you will eat (we are not picky eaters thankfully and it was all very delicious) and they do not allow you to take food from outside into your rooms. Although they made an exception as we really appreciated them for letting us take kid snacks and milk/juice for the little one’s into our rooms and adding them to the mini-bar refrigerator. The breakfast, which is included in the room price, was wonderful! But again, because nothing else is near by or walking distance to eat at, you have no choice but to eat their set menu at steep Euro prices of 18 Euro for lunch and 25 for dinner. Free for kids under 5 yrs old thankfully. It looks like a resort but they do not have all the resources of a resort (open all day café’s etc)

Then there were the Dar Ilham sponsored excursions. The excursions are not run by the Dar Ilham but instead they use 3rd party companies so everyone get’s paid differently; either to the Dar Ilham, directly to the excursion company OR to the cab driver. This is where there was much miscommunication and frustration due to payments and which days we were going to do certain excursions BUT Imane, Alain and the other managers did their best to correct any misunderstandings. Although I can say that the excursions themselves and the guides for all of them were excellent! Highly recommend Jamal for the city tours and the cooking class. Just always confirm who you pay, how much and when. WRITE it down.

My husband’s first reaction when I asked him what his initial thoughts were on our vacation was “I though it was great except the feeling of everyone trying to rip you off or potentially steal your money. Other than that…it was great!” He was talking more about our experience in Morocco than at the Dar Ilham obviously. Although he too agreed that the food structure at the Dar Ilham was not that conducive for “vacation” eat when you want as much or as little as you want. But when you are driven out of the Dar Ilham, it felt like were on guard. You had to have a mentality that it was business…not personal which is not so fun to experience on vacation. Oh well…it’s not Palm Springs for crying out loud! This was Morocco! So you can get an amazing and vibrant Moroccan experience with professional pick pocketer’s, snake and monkey charmers, henna painters and food stalls galore AND be prepared for the prices to change on you every 5 minutes, depending on where you are from (US or UK seem to get steeper prices). It was comical really!

If you are considering doing this with young children, be prepared to have an adventurous spirit when going into the city and buy snacks for them for in between meals. Other than that, we can’t wait to go again without the little one’s one day and doing some serious shopping in the souks and enjoy the Hammam experience. We would definitely go back to the Dar Ilham with an understanding of their shuttle service being pricy in between offered times, set price and set menu and get a detailed clear understanding of their excursions.

Room Tip: The larger suites are ideal if you have children, but if you can't afford that, choose the Agadi...

Our second stay was just as perfect as the first at Dar Ilham. It is a wonderful place and so relaxing - you can do as much or as little as you want, nothing is a problem and they are happy to organise and look after you for your entire stay. We have teenage girls and they loved the contrast of staying in a quiet oasis and then within a short time being in the chaotic and colourful Medina. The staff are beyond excellent and have a gentle kindness which is so unusual as well as a fabulous sense of fun . Imane, Malika and Lala to name just three. Planning another visit at Easter if work/studies permit.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good with balconies and a seating area. The beds are large (doubles) and comforta...

I just spent a few days in Dar Ilham Kasbah with a friend of mine, and we really enjoyed it! we were picked up at the airport by the kasbah's driver, a really friendly wlecome and a ride through the city center before getting to the hotel! Dar Ilham is a really peaceful place to stay, and I've been really pleased by all the activities proposed by the hotel team around the kasbah: horse riding, hot-air baloon, quad, camel riding... The hotel is far enough from the city center so that you can enjoy the quietness of the place, and yet, it is not a problem to get to marrakech medina (regular free buses stop just in front of the hotel). What's more, the hotel team was really nice, and the room was well and nicely furnished, not to speak about the warmed swimming pool: great!
