“Dar Melody is really excellent.”
Reviewed 12 May 2012

Other reviewers are not exaggerating about Dar Meldoy. The owners, Laurent and Bernard, are great hosts. Bernard arranged for us to get from and to the train station and Laurent immediately gave us a map, oriented us to Fes and recommended a few restaurants. No matter where you stayed in the medina, you would have to walk. We probably walked a little further exploring Marrakech, But, Fes is built on a big hill. Dar Meldoy is downhill from most sights, so the walk back at the end of the day is the easy part.

The room we stayed in was massive; the bathroom was also exceptionally large and very well appointed. Breakfasts were unbelievable: fresh juices and fruit, eggs or smoked salmon and cheese, toast, croissants or pastries, a selection of pancakes and crepes, jams and honeys.

I would recommend Dar Melody to anyone I know-- from my siblings to my colleagues to my mother-in-law-- and feel assured that every one of them would thank me afterwards for doing so.

Room Tip: The orange room was very large, and included a nice lounge. The bathroom was equally large, with dou...

The whole place is beautiful with incredible attention to detail. We loved Laurent and Bernard! What a great french couple that own/run this riad! We wish we spoke French so we could hang out with them and drink wine! We liked it so much, we originally booked 2 nights and extended to 4.

The hostpitaltiy we recevied was top notch. Our first night Laurent walked us to dinner (15 minute walk) so we wouldn't get lost (the entire Fes medina is one big intimidating confusing labyrinth). She also will help make calls for whatever you need arranged while in town, and if you want help deciding what to do she is very helpful (i.e. booing excursions, getting guides, Hammams, etc). When the taxi did not show up to take us to the airport, Bernard drove us in his own car without hesitation.

Seriously though, they were great hosts and the breakfasts they prepared each morning were the best we had anywhere in Morocco, hands down. I'm talking 3 different types of freshly squeezed juice, a variety of fruit, warm beignets, scrambled eggs to order, smoked salmon, Moroccan and French-style crepes, a variety of jams, etc., etc. Unbelievable, and each morning was different.

Our room was great as well. Nice sitting area with couch and good bathroom (even a hair dryer!). We received complimentary bottles of water each day and each night there was a decorative tagine that we uncovered delicious moroccan sweets. Great touches.

Really nice terrace with panoramic view of the hillside and medina and cozy Moroccan lounge furniture. Great place to relax.

If we're being really picky, our only minor complaints are that the hosts sometimes smoke in their private area (it is there home after all) and the smell wafts up to our room. If you are sensitive to smoking, this may bother you. They also have an adorable, old dog (which we loved), but if you are allergic, its good to know in advance. Our room only had one small window, which was in the bathroom. All rooms overlook the central area, which can get noisy with people talking.

It definitely feels as though you are staying at someone's home, where they see you come at go. Felt a little uncomfortable at first, but then it became a comforting feeling. Could have used a few updates to feel more like a hotel (i.e. matching hangers in the closet, amenities in the bathroom).

Though this riad is in the medina, its not exactly centrally located. Its about a 15 walk to the nearest restaurant (Restaurant Zhoura-great food and pre fix menu for only 80 dihram) and it was definitely an isolated, dark walk back. After sundown, if you are venturing to restaurants on the other side of the medina, its best to take a cab. However, even the nearest cab pick up area is about a 10 minute walk from the riad. Unfortunately each night we were hassled by kids/young men trying to give us directions home and then asking for money. Not at all the riad's fault (Laurent even warned us of this ahead of time), but just for other travelers to be aware.

We stayed here in April and just loved it! The personal service we received was just excellent, this accommodation was the highlight of our trip around Morocco. As others have said, the breakfasts were really fun, never knowing what fantastic concoction would arrive next! Laurence and Bernard were very helpful and nothing was too much trouble. We had the Menzeh room on the top floor and it was worth the climb to have such a romantic room, and the use of the roof top terrace beside it. Amazing value for money, and I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone (even my mother and she's very hard to please!)

Room Tip: The Menzeh room is spacious and on the top floor, right beside the outdoor terrace.

Me, my wife and a colleague of mine stayed 2 nighs in Dar Melody during our trip to Morocco.
This was the best hosting experience and definitively the highlight of our trip!
We were met on the parking by Laurence, and she guided through the labyrinths of Fes to their home. Just after entering, we got an impression of 1001 night atmosphere - the dar looks so authentic, we could not believe that we will actually sleep there :)

Laurence invited us to their "office/breakfast" space, where she offered us a very tasty fruit salad. She explained us the rules of the house and showed us the rooms.
We took the family room and it was very spacios and very convenient room, and the design of the shower cabin was done nicely with Arabic arch.

Hoever, the nice surprises were not over! :)
After we woke up next morning, the breakfast was really huge nice surprise.
Many freshly prepared juice combinations, Arabic loafs and pancakes, croissants, plenti of everything and served in a great style. Even in France i could not get this in nice restaurants!

Before we go exploring Fes, Laurence gave us maps and explained places worth seeing.
Bernard (Laurence's husband) was answering most of our questions and suggested inexpensive and quite good restaurant in Medina.

Overall, our stay was absolutely fantastic, and we are really thankful to Laurence and Bernard for making this stay the highlight of our trip!

Thank you!
Anton, Natalija and Mariusz
