Belize City may not be known as a tourists' paradise, but it's a central location from which to explore cayes and coast, rainforest and Mayan ruins. If you want your time in Belize City to be pleasant, that's easy: stay here!
Dreme Inn is a clean, colorful, well-kept refuge where you can make yourself at home to take a hot shower, cook your own meals or walk to beachfront restaurants, and sleep in air-conditioned comfort. The delightful courtyard was a wonderfully breezy place to sit and relax at any time of day. Standing in the courtyard, you can see the ocean through the cute "windows" in the privacy wall. Although the wall limits the view from this ground-floor apartment across the street to the seawall (no beach here in Belize City), it makes the courtyard a secure, peaceful oasis where you can sit in your pajamas to have your coffee in the morning (or a drink in the evening) without being exposed to passers-by.
The owners were on site when we arrived, and they were willing to pick us up from the airport for US$35. This was a good investment because not only did it spare us the hassle of dealing with a cab, they also helped us get our bearings in the city and were even kind enough to let us stop at a grocery store to pick up a few things on our way in. Throughout our visit they were kind and helpful, going out of their way to make sure we had everything we needed. Not only did they supply information about local restaurants, transportation, etc., they also hooked us up with the best Ziplining and Cave Tubing company. That was the highlight of our trip; definitely do that while you are here! Another highlight was the Belize Zoo, an underrated gem, with local animals in their native habitat--pumas and jaguars and howler monkeys, oh my!
From this location you can walk to the iconic BELIZE sign and the Tourism Village. Walk to the water taxi and take a pleasant boat ride to Caye Caulker and to San Pedro on Ambergris Caye. Or rent a car and drive up to Corozal, down to Placencia, or out west to San Ignacio.
In short, I'm convinced that Dreme Inn is the best place to stay in Belize City, and can't imagine staying anywhere else on a future visit.
PS They now have a lovely 1 BR unit available upstairs as well--no courtyard, but a wonderful balcony with an ocean view. If you only need one bedroom, check it
