I've stayed in many 4 and 5 star resorts. Xanadu is the most unique and peaceful place by far. They don't have a restaurant/bar onsite, but everything is within walking distance. We stayed in the 2bedroom Manatee suite which is privately owned. It is decorated in contemporary design, has pillow top beds, dual sink bathrooms, satellite tv, internet access, full kitchen, wrap around porch with a table and 6 chairs, a hammock, and 2 lounge chairs.
Lupe, Martin, Susan and staff were outstanding.
They arranged every single excursion with the dive shops we wanted to use. We just paid Xanadu on departure.
The lounge/chair huts were wonderful to keep the sun out while reading.
The resort is easily 10 degrees cooler than out on the street of Ambergris Caye. The vegetation (palm trees etc...) keep it shaded and cool. The grounds are pristinely manicured. We never met one person that wasn't friendly while there.
The best thing about Belize is that it's not commercialized. We also felt we had the resort all to ourselves. They have about 20 units available and we ran across a few great people that we'll keep in touch with!
We used Simon's Lagniappe Provisioning to provide our food/drinks before arrival. I recommend renting a golf cart or taxi to go to the big Supermarket in town (much bigger selection than Marina's).
I felt like I was in another world at this resort. The water is gorgeous, and like others have said... you can't expect a beach like you think of in the States. You can swim/snorkel off the end of the pier, but there's no walking into the surf.
I wouldn't say this is a child/family resort. We were surprised and taken aback when a family with 2 kids arrived the day before our departure. So, if you want an adult mostly place, this is it.
Hint... dowload ---- the new shiny skype 2.0 before you go. Take your webcam and you can call the states for about 2 cents/minute.
Email me with any questions. I plan to go back year after year.

We stayed at Xanadu Island Resort for our honeymoon in October. The place and the people were great! Knowing that it was our honeymoon - there was a chilled bottle of wine and two chilled glasses waiting for us when we arrived in our room.

We stayed in an ocean view room - it was a great view. The room itself had a kitchen, two bathrooms and two beds. It was very spacious for just the two of us! The room was cleaned everyday - a good job too. The pool was great and clean.

The people at the resort were great also! They were very helpful. Any excursion we wanted to go on - they could answer questions and tell us their experience. For most of the excursions, the boat picked us up right at the end of the dock. We booked all of our excursions through the hotel.

Because we went in the off season - some of the excursions may not have been available, but the hotel worked very hard to get us which excursion we wanted.

The only drawback I have of the hotel was the lack of bar/restaurant on site. And again because it was the off season, the closest neighboring restaurants were closed. So we had to make a trip into town each time.

But I would definitel stay there again! C

Just back from a week at Xanadu, with kids 10 & 15 in tow. Here are some facts about the place: property, with stone retaining wall at the beach, is about 100 yards wide, so not very big. Nice, long pier, though. Wonderful vegetation, giving a true tropical feel to the place. Small but inviting pool. Stayed in suite #10, beachfront, spacious and well equiped, two TVs with cable. Can brush teeth and shower with the water on the property, although it's not tasty to drink. In fact, we were able to trust the ice everywhere we ate around town. We hired a golf cart for the entire week and were glad to have it at our disposal. Lagniappe Provisioning shopped for us and had our kitchen stocked before we arrived - very very nice. Complimentary kayaks - easy to operate. Staff attentive and cordial. The place has a personal, laid-back feel. Casual. Quiet. A good choice on Ambergris Caye.

We stayed for a week in December and coming back in March 06 for two weeks. Everything about the place is fantastic. We have travelled all over the Caribbean and have never found a better spot with friendlier people or better service anywhere. Sue and Lupe at the resort were especially helpful. The rooms were exceptionally clean and the kitchen was well-equipped. The beach was clean and tidy. Having use of the bicycles at no additional cost was a real plus. Grocers and supplies are close at hand which made for a very convenient and enjoyable stay. We found most restaurants on the island to be of good quality and reasonably priced. This place is a tropical paradise! We can't wait to come back!
