Mahogany Bay is a beautiful resort with a great concept. There is definitely still construction going on within the property but overall my sister and I enjoyed our stay. We had a little trouble with our first cottage a/c so we were moved and the second cottage safe wouldn't work, but Sandra the Manager made sure we were taken care of and the problem resolved. The staff on the property are all very friendly and helpful. The 1 bedroom cottage rooms are small and do not have much room for luggage or places to put your clothes but it is nice to have your own little place complete with porch. We ate at three different restaurants, The Veranda, Shaken, and Jyoto Japanese Place, on the property (there are several more places that we didn't make it to) while we were there and all of our meals were excellent! The Rum and Bean was very cute and inviting for an after dinner coffee or dessert cocktail. The main house bar was great, mixing up good drinks in a nice atmosphere. The pool is nice size with plenty of chairs, towel service, and pool side service. You have to take a boat to get to the private beach. The boat ride to the private beach was actually very nice and the beach was amazing. Beautiful water (shallow, not deep at all and no seaweed), private, beach side service, and has a bar/restaurant. We rented one of the beach beds one day and it was awesome, food and drinks were brought to our bed. How great is that!!. We were very disappointed that they closed our beach the last day we were there for some work and took us to Secret Beach. Secret Beach isn't so secret. It was crowded, hard to find a chair, and just not nice. So it ended up being a pool day at the resort. They have a concierge on site that can organize any day trip for you. We did one snorkeling excursion and it was awesome. Our biggest complaint about our stay were the mosquitos! If you typically get bit by mosquitoes (My sister and I are magnets for them) then you will get eaten alive here. They literally attack you as soon as you walkout the door. Some of the local folks call it Mosquito Bay instead of Mahogany Bay. There are literally cans of OFF in the main house and the restaurants for you to use. I took a travel size can of OFF with me and it was gone in 2 days, so bring extra. The resort has been attempting to spray for them but I didn't notice any difference throughout our 5 day stay. For me, if they get the mosquitoes under control, I would definitely return. Probably, get a bigger cottage. If mosquitoes don't bother you...this is where you should stay. It is really a great resort!

Dear LatinaTravel

Thank you and your sister for selecting Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club for your visit to Ambergris Caye. We are glad that you mostly enjoyed your visit.

Mosquitoes are an ongoing challenge in a tropic environment We are striving to get that situation under control whilst still being sensitive to the fragile eco-system on the island.

We hope we will have the chance to welcome you both back in the near future.

The trip at Mahogany Bay was nothing short of amazing. I have passport stamps from all over the world and am considered extremely picky when it comes to choosing accommodations and this one ranks high.

Arrival: We were nervous about how to arrive at the resort considering you have to go from Belize City via either air plane or water taxi. We chose the water taxi (we hate small planes LOL) and were pleasantly surprised to be greeted by name at the water taxi depot by a driver (not sure how to spell his name but it was pronounced Ruki) for the hotel. He promptly helped us with our bags and said he had been checking for us all day. This small gesture set the tone for the trip. He was very nice and a great way to be greeted to the island with suggestions of places to eat and a small tour.
SUGGESTION FOR HOTEL: Have a prompt on the website for guest to leave their arrival information so the hotel doesn't have to search for us.
Once at the hotel, check-in was easy and someone took us by golf cart to our room and gave us a very detailed tour of the resort which helped us hit the ground running the next morning as we were familiar with where to go.

Accommodations: The room was very nice; we had the 2 queen beds "Keeping Suite". It was more then enough space for the two of us (girls trip) and the bathroom was perfect! We each had our own sink, a spacious rain shower, and the toilet was off to the side (which I like if there is no water closet). The room had a small kitchen that was well appointed with cooking and eating utensils. Do note that the windows do not have glass window panes - they all only had the wooden plantation shutters and screens. The breeze was nice when you opened them. The only issue was ants if you left anything "sweet" out near the window. Note, ants were not an issue unless food was left near the window, so for us, it was a non-issue.

Amenities: The description on the website doesn't do the resort justice. There are way more amenities then you realize and we were pleasantly surprised to find so many things we had access to at the actual resort. They have food shacks on the property that make fresh empanadas, donuts, tacos, bbq and more in addition to a sushi restaurant and a martini bar. The free continental bfast in the morning was a nice touch as we often grabbed something in a rush and you always have the option to order a hot bfast from the menu. The spa on site was AMAZING! We received several spa services including a body scrub and the highlight was the spa coming to us on the beach! The ladies took the spa tables to the beach club and performed our massages right there! The ride to the beach club was a pleasant less then 15 min boat ride. Our Captains Patrick and Brandon made it so much fun! It was a pleasure to see their smiling faces each day. Joel in the Concierge office was so easy to work with. We hadn't made any previous plans and he made booking activities a breeze. Chef Robert at the beach house kept us fed well and I hate I can't remember the bartenders name but he was great. But most importantly Carlos at the beach club ensured we felt like rock stars our entire stay! He made sure each guest had everything they needed to be comfortable and enjoy themselves. The water is very shallow for a long way out, but if you research beaches in Belize, this is not uncommon. Unlike other resorts, ours did NOT have to deal with seaweed. It was a beautiful beach with easy access to paddle boards and kayaks and we paid the low daily fee to rent a bed over the water each day. You even get food and bar service at your bed!

In all, I can not say enough about the resort and its staff. They were all so nice and so welcoming and so helpful. I was very comfortable and found this trip to be the relaxing experience I needed. Other reviews mentioned the construction - yes, they are still actively expanding the resort BUT we did NOT have any issues with this. There was no early morning noise that woke us up (aside from the upstairs neighbors) and the grounds are kept nice and neat and there was no "overflow" of construction activities into the main areas so we were not at all disturbed by it. I highly recommend a stay at Mahogany Bay. Now that Southwest Airlines makes it so easy to get to Belize, I'll be back soon!

Room Tip: Ask for a top floor if in a keeping suite so you aren't at the mercy of those above you.

Dear 5StarChic29

Thank you so much for visiting us at Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club. I hope you don't mind if I "re-purpose" your header to this review.

On behalf of the entire team, who this review will be shared with, we appreciate your kind words and comments. We are glad you and your friend had such a great girls weekend away.

We will endeavor to get a better form of communication in place regarding water taxi arrivals. Our own website will be re-launched in the coming months, so hopefully that will allow for that sort of messaging.

Most importantly, we look forward to welcoming you back in the very near future.

Can I tell you that I LOVED this place soooooooo much! The staff was AMAZING and beyond accommodating, Sabdi, Lovenia, Marvin, Michael, Travis,Justin, Mr. Ross, and the entire registration and security team! You will love this place. We had the food Everyday and the sushi... is oh so good! The private beach is heaven with WIFI, great drinks and food! The restaurant has the most delectable, divine and delicious chocolate cake ever.... And I don't even eat chocolate cake.....you must try the fry jacks and the waffles and pineapples with the caramel rum sauce.... CHILLLLLLEEE! It's beyond Ridiculous and Amazing! You willLOVE this place. Locals have great food.... so try Hidden Treasures, they will come and pick you up. Caramabas is good and so is Blue Water Grill. You will need a golf cart, so dont just think you will be able to walk everywhere, because that might be a bit challenging. Locals will make you a deal, and even the taxi drivers ( Roukay) he was great, and we rented from him. But you can also rent from the hotel as well. We met the developer of this beautiful hotel! She was great. The area is still being developed, but it's going to be a breathtaking resort. The accommodations were so simple and heavenly! Everything is in Belize dollars, and locals are fair with selling their products and items! I must warn you the mosquitos are very aggressive, chillleeee they will chase you down. Lol! So make sure you bring your off and AVON product to keep them away. We are planning another trip back to Belize and I will stay 100 times again!! This place is Heavenly! Enjoy your stay!

Stayed with three other couples in Garden Cottages at the end of April. Enjoyed the pool, the food, the staff and the private beach. Close enough to town that it is not a lengthy or painful ride like it is coming up the dirt road from further south. Some complain about the 10 minute boat ride to the beach, but it is an awesome ride and gives you a look at the island from a different point of view. Dirty Martini and Jyoto are fun stand-alone restaurants with tasty food. There is a lot of construction going on, but it didn't bother us in the least. Can't wait to see this place fully built out. Watch out for mosquitoes at sunset, especially following rain - ask for bug spray.

Dear Craigerator

Thank you and your friends for visiting us at Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club as well as your review. We agree that the boat ride is a pretty stellar way of arriving at the Beach Club.

We continue to try and outsmart the mosquitoes and will continue to work on that, We are very glad that you enjoyed all the food and beverage options as well. They are good fun and hope you had a doughnut from Sticky Fingers! They are pretty awesome.

We look forward to welcoming you and your friends back in the very near future.

We should have been more skeptical. The private beach club is nice, but it's a 15min boat ride away and that boat only leaves once per hour. This resort is still very much under construction with loud people and machines even at 7am. The staff is all super friendly and charming but you never know if the information they give you is accurate. Ask 3 people what time a facility at the resort closes and you will get three answers. Book your activities elsewhere. The prices on the activities sheets that they have printed and emailed were increased on us, but then they backed off when we pointed out that the price they were trying to charge us was different. Still, the cottages and common buildings are gorgeous and the food options on the premise are great. There's a lot of potential, just wait a few years till they get everything together.
