“Best Disney Hotel Choice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 June 2012

We've stayed at Disney's Grand Californian several times and have loved it every time! We live in Southern California and usually arrive before noon and have never had to wait until a 3pm check-in to get into our room. You are greeted at the entrance gate and by the time you reach the valet, the staff know your name! We were celebrating my daughter's high school graduation and my sister and her family were visiting. I booked a package through Disney for 7 people and it was very expensive-don't think that was worth the $, so I would book everything separately. We had 2 rooms, which were connecting-a King bedded room with a pull out sofa and a double Queen bedded room. The rooms are large and spacious, but the bathrooms were rather small (especially for 4 girls sharing). There is a small desk area and a small closet and storage space. We also had a small balcony which overlooked the front drive of the hotel. We didn't hear any noise at all and slept very soundly on the comfortable beds. The hotel is big, so it's easy to get lost. The grand room is very grand indeed! Like being in a huge lodge in the woods. There is a huge center fireplace with lots of seating areas and couches. There is also an area with a TV that plays Disney movies and cartoons for the kids as they sit in little rocking chairs. My 7 year old niece thoroughly enjoyed it! In my opinion, the Grand Californian is the best Disney hotel choice if you want to stay on property. There is direct access into Disney's California Adventure park and Downtown Disney is directly adjacent to the hotel. I really have nothing negative to say about our stay-though the hotel definitely isn't luxurious, after all, it's supposed to be a lodge in the woods. Since my daughter had just graduated, she received a personalized "just graduated" pin to wear and we were also celebrating my sister, brother-in-law and niece's birthdays, so they got "birthday" pins too. The hotel property is lovely, we didn't swim in the pool, though it looked very nice-huge, with lots of loungers, etc...I've had a massage in the spa (several years ago) and as I recall, it was very nice. We ate dinner in the Storyteller's Cafe and we all thought the food was excellent! The buffet (at $28) was worth it according to my sister and brother in law. There was nothing we were disappointed with. I would definitely stay again. The Grand Californian represents Disney quality and service.

Room Tip: We were in the least expensive rooms on the 3rd floor with no view of the park (our view was of the...

Arrived at lax and headed to baggage claim. Grabbed bags and went to bus stop, buses run every half hour to Disneyland hotels. We lucked out, one arrived in about ten. Ride to hotel went quickly, driver announced since we had vouchers and were going to the grand Californian  he would drop us off first! Awesome :)
Arrived in lobby, no one to help with bags, initial check in downstairs, they sent someone to take us up to concierge level, still no help with bags! Women at concierge check in was brisk and fairly rude, seemed to only give memorized info, no smile. Luckily everyone else we've met has been very nice and helpful. Other Concierge staff always say hello, can we help you? Lounge concierges always suggesting and helping. This am one helped me make a latte and another ran downstairs to find bananas. Must have been an off day for the women at check in.
Room (6001) is normal Disney room, two queens, a desk and dresser. Flat screen tv and nice balcony that overlooks monorail but also can see parks and had a nice view of the fireworks last night.roomy closet and double sinks, small tub and toilet area. Bathroom door is a slider and is okay except noisy when used which can be a problem when others are sleeping and you're trying to be quiet. Upgraded toiletries. Robes in closet. Beds were comfy and choice of pillows, all decor is pleasant and reflects wilderness with a wdw wilderness lodge feel. Concierge is on the sixth floor and is open to look down at the lobby. Some noise from below and our room which is in the main area does have some noise from the lobby. Also when entering/exiting room you must take care due to the doors proximity to main area. Our patio door was broken on arrival, as was our toilet seat, both of which was reported, the door was fixed but the seat never was.
Lounge has typical breakfast fare, croissants, coffee and latte machine, meats and cheeses, assorted cereals. Always water, milk, sodas. Wine and beer in the evening, along with mini sandwiches and cookies, chocolates. You can view fireworks from the lounge and a storyteller is present in the evening.
We had asked for a late check out if possible as we had the entire day at Disney, but it could only be extended to noon, so we elected to just check our bags and continue on to the parks. Bell service checked everything and we went on our way. On return, it was a quick wait for the bags and we parked ourselves at the shuttle pick up. Soon we were on our way to lax for the next part of our adventure.
In three weeks we will be back to stay at paradise pier, review will follow.

Nothing beats Disney customer service and that's what you get from the moment you pull up to this place. We've stayed here before and every time it's a great experience. It's pricey, but what you are paying for is the famous Disney service and above all, the proximity to the action. If you are thinking you will get a amazingly huge room for the price, reset your expectations. You are paying for service and location.

When you pull up to the hotel, they immediately greet you by name and welcome you with a spirited and fun personality. They are quick to unload your luggage and bring it up to your room while they park your car. They do charge $22 a day for valet and $17 for self park I believe. At the front desk, they are warm and welcoming. They treat the kids like stars and share all their tips and secrects of the hotel and the parks with you to maximize your experience. Our room was ready at 9am which was a huge plus!

The rooms are basic. Our room had a queen bed and bunk beds with a pullout trundle. We have 3 kids so it's perfect. I've stayed in rooms with two queens also and they are exactly the same. The beds are comfy and they do nightly turndown service with a chocolate candy each night. That's a huge hit with the kids. We also had a room (5135) that faced downtown Disney and it was great to watch the fireworks from the balcony.

The bathroom has two sinks separate from the shower and toilet. It's small be servicable. My only complaint with the shower is that the water pressure was very low. They give you a couple of robes and plenty of towels. They understand you have 5 people in the room and stock accordingly.

The room has a fridge, iron and ironing board, hair dryer and one TV. It would have been nice if the TV could swivel. It was mounted in front of the bunk beds so it was hard for the parents to watch and change the channel.

I ordered room service for lunch one day. I got a quesadilla and fries and it was $22. It was good but the portions were small. If there's one thing Disney needs to figure out is the food. All of the food is way too expensive and most of it is very unhealthy.

The grounds of the hotel are spectacular. The lobby is beautiful and a nice place to read the paper and sip your coffee. The pools are great for the family and adults alike. Entrance to the parks can't be beat. You are right there. It's great to come back and change, take a nap, whatever you need.

All in all, this is the premier place to stay if you can afford it. The newly remodeled rooms at the Disneyland Hotel are nicer but the location of the Grand Californian can't be beat. I would rate this hotel excellent if they adjusted their prices a bit, fixed the water pressure and rearranged the rooms a bit. But for service, you can't beat it.

Room Tip: If you want to watch fireworks, ask for a room that faces downtown Disney. If you have 3 kids, ask...

I was somewhat conflicted about spending the money to stay at the Grand Californian as reviews weren't consistent. The only disappointment was our room view. However, there were trees and we could hear the excitement from the park on the balcony- something we enjoyed that others may not. No noise, tho, after the door was closed. All of the services were excellent and we appreciated the easy access to the parks. We enjoyed the turn down service and having a pretty basket for used towels - something I hadn't seen before. Of course the lobby was truly grand and my husband liked spending his time there while waiting for the rest of us to get going. I'm glad that we stayed at this property. Expensive, but a good experience.

Room Tip: Ask, when checking in, what type of view you will have if this is important to you. Some reviews ind...

We stayed here for six nights. The hotel is very impressive and well appointed and maintained. The grand hall is very spectacular.

Rooms are on the small side and are very clean with good quality linen and comfortable beds. We slept very well in this hotel.

This hotel is very popular and the price reflects this popularity more so than what you are literally buying for your dollar i.e. the hotel is very expensive when compared to what you can get at other holiday locations but as in all things this is a supply and demand situation - there is only one top quality hotel near Disneyland and so a premium price must be paid.

The hotel provides convenient access to Disneyland and California Adventure. As hotel guests we were able to get preview access to Carsland before it publicly opens too.

The only thing that annoyed us was the unbelievably conservative safety policy around the pool. The lifeguards were extremely zealous and acted aggressively to reduce very minor risks and risks that frankly existed only in the lifeguards' imaginations. We've never experienced this at other hotels. For us this came across as complete silliness and we'll not stay at this hotel again because of this - we want to be able to use the pool without having to play silly games with the lifeguards.

On our last day there was a fire drill; it was obviously a practice for a number of reasons including the non-appearance of fire appliances, the fact the alarm had not sounded in the area we were in, that lifts were still operating, and so on. The pool area was evacuated and half an hour after the drill had ended and guests had returned to the pool area the lifeguards were still refusing to allow guests to enter the pools.
