“Cute hotel with good service in a decent location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 September 2012

I stayed at the hotel with my family for 3 days, and I really liked the hotel. To be honest, the hotel is nothing fancy, but it had everything that made our stay pleasant.

The rooms are pretty spacious and the beds comfortable, the staff is very friendly and always quick to help out in whichever way is needed, they have iHome devices to charge iPhones etc., a neat minibar with some exotic choices. You can pour free herbal tea/lemonade in the afternoons, and on some days even have a free wine tasting in the (small) lobby. There is a nice small hotel bar as well.

To be fair, some of the amenities offered aren't that exciting. The gym is in the basement and pretty bad as far as gym goes. It's tiny and besides a couple of treadmills only has a few free weights. The breakfast which is offered isn't particularly exciting either, but considering that you are so close to many coffee houses & restaurants this wasn't really a big concern. The bathrooms in the rooms are clean and work well, but are very tiny. This didn't bother me, but bothered my wife. My requirements for a bathroom are that it's clean and works, all of which applied. My wife has higher standards, I believe she is only satisfied if a bathroom has at least 800 square feet and a whirlpool :-).

So in summary it's not a Ritz Carlton, but for the price we got we felt that we got a good value and had a pleasant experience. And yes, there is a lot of red; the hotel used to be an apartment building from what I understand.

All the rooms are really red, but it is really nice and very comfortable. Had a handicapped accessible room that made the bathroom huge. A great Kimpton in a convenient neighborhood in DC. Service was wonderful and would definitely stay again.

Dear vamel. Thank you for taking the time to write about your experience at Hotel Rouge. I love that you enjoyed the unique red accented décor – we think it’s nice change from boring beige!

Our first visit to Washington and after lots of research decided on the Rouge - so glad we did, it far exceeded our expectations. The exterior entrance does not look much but the lobby and decor more than makes up for it. Snazzy and funky but without pretention we all loved it. Travelling with a 72 and 12 year old, the 2 x double bed room was easily large enough for the three of us, very spacious with a separate dressing area leading to the bathroom. Beds large and very comfy. Room was overlooking the road but we didn't get any noise. There is free wifi if you register with Kimptons but on my smart phone it was sporadic - so Stephen on the front desk kindly lent me the use of the staff ipad so I could check our connecting flights to new york...at no extra charge. Breakfast is more than adequate and we had no problem getting a table every morning. All staff were very pleasant and those on reception were extremely helpful - a big thanks to Stephen inparticular for his assistance and making us feel welcome.

Only criticism is that we were unaware about the happy hour with complimentary wine and nibbles until our last night. There is no inroom info on the hotel or room services (such as mini bar prices and TV movies). If information on the hotel, in the room, was available this would be very helpful.

There are good restaurants nearby - we went to the Nage and Posto - and there is a fantastic food market not far away. We also ate at the Old Ebbit Grill on our last night near the White House - would definitely recommend. The National Geographic HQ is only a block away from the Rouge - and the metro train is another block on, which is an easy hop to Washington Union Station where the open top bus tours operate from. Would definitely recommend visiting Arlington Cemetery - fascinating.

Our first stay at a Kimpton Hotel - if the others are as good as the Rouge, then we won't be disappointed!

This was our first time in DC and we could not have chosen a better location or Hotel. Not right in the downtown area but close enough to get there easily by foot or a short cab ride. The room was spacious and well equipped, extremely comfortable bed. We did not eat here but we did have a couple of drinks during happy hour, the bar is small so it fills up quickly. The front desk staff were very helpful, we had a suitcase malfunction which the maintenance guy dealt with in a second. Great all round. Thank you.
