Description: Just west of our nation's Capitol, Rosa Mexicano Penn Quarter location is situated in the exceptionally restored 1924 Hecht’s building across from the Verizon Center. As the first Rosa Mexicano to open outside of New York City in December 2003, this D.C. location remains true to its roots by delivering authentic Mexican cuisine in a stylish, festive atmosphere. The interior features eye-catching details that include 14-foot wraparound windows, a spacious bar and lounge area, and a tequila bar offering a wide range of premium selections and margaritas. Traditional folk crafts have also been incorporated throughout the restaurant, most notably in a dramatic series of illuminated pilasters featuring festive Mexican masks mounted on the wall. It’s a feast for the eyes as well as the tastebuds.

I grew up in Arizona where each town has at least one hole in the wall that has great Mexican food and inexpensive prices. Rosa Mexicano is not one of those places. It is an upscale Mexican restaurant with food that is more sophisticated. The guacamole is made tableside with fresh ingrediants. I had a pomegranate margarita, Ensalada de la Casa (house salad) and enchiladas suizas. My husband had sangria, Ensalada de la Casa and a quesadilla . I don't ususally drink margaritas, but I love pomegranates. I felt that the lime overwhelmed the pomegranate flavor. We enjoyed everything else. The sangria came in a little pitcher and was enough for two glasses. The salads were large enough that I could not eat all of my enchiladas. (I took the rest home). Our bill was $70.

Being from Southern California, my wife and I were apprehensive to try a Mexican place on the east coast. Boy it was good!. The guacamole was chunky and spicy, the hot sauce was smoky and spicy, and the Cochinita Pebil was savory. You can't go wrong for quality food at this place.

I recommend it.

I went to the Washington location of Rosa Mexicano last night and it was a mixed bag: good food with lousy service. The tiled wall and sheetrock ceiling made for good decore, but the sound level they produced made conversation difficult. The tortilla soup, pork pibil and filet mignon were all well-prepared and I recommend them all. The beef was cooked medium rare, just as requested. But the entries were served while I was still eating my soup, with no apology or other indication from the server that he was doing something wrong. When my cup of coffee was brought to me, there was a large puddle of coffee sitting in the saucer. We ordered one dessert, but were charged for a different, more expensive one (probably by accident, but it annoyed me just the same). On several occasions I've been to the Rosa Mexicano in NYC, where I live, and found the same problem there. If you're looking for good real Mexican (not Taco Bell tex-mex) food, and you can put up with the service, it's worth considering.
