We were excited based on the reviews
The fish was poorly prepared
The meat entree tough
Service just ok

Must have been a bad night based on other reviews
Although there were virtually no other people in the restaurant than our group of 12

I have been to 5-star vegan restaurants many many times and this restaurant is not only on-par but BETTER! The food was unbelievably delicious. We had theatre tix so we opted for the early pre-fixe meal. For $35! +$20 wine pairing (very nicely priced) we had the vegan caesar salad (best caesar salad we have both ever had!) smoky tempeh with just the right amount of dressing fabulous paired with a nice rose, then we had the ravioli, homemade marinara with fresh veggies paired with a cote du rhone (amazing!) and we finished with a decadent peanut butter and chocolate mousse with vegan vanilla ice cream paired with a nice plum port. Whoa! The service was perfect, food absolutely delicious. We will most likely be back within the next week to try more dishes. Beautiful little underground restaurant. You won't be disappointed.

We were recommended Cedar by some friends who are local to DC, as it offered a vegan option for one of our party.

You are greeted by stairs which lead down to a beautifully lit, nicely decorated restaurant with bar area. We arrived early evening but there was already a good buzz about the place.

Our waitress was superb. Just the perfect tone with some good fun thrown in. We all ordered a different dish and we were all extremely happy. Wonderful flavour combos from perfectly cooked dishes. And then there were the desserts....oh wow.

We paid roughly $40 each for 2 courses including a couple of drinks. A perfectly fair price for the quality of the food, service and surroundings.

Cedar is located in a basement close to Verizon center. If it has an elevator, I've never seen it. However, if stairs are no problem, it's worth the trip. We generally enjoy choices from the pre-theatre menu with a wine pairing. The portions of both food and wine are generous making it a bargain. There is a bar in the room, but even when it's active the room is not loud. Salmon, duck and lamb are some of my favorite dishes. The beet salad is a great way to start the meal.

Cedar is a small restaurant in the basement of a building in Penn Quarter. There is some exposed duct work, but it's nicely appointed and not cramped.

The menu is a typical DC brunch menu with chicken and waffles, french toast and egg dishes. Chicken and waffles are definitely my style, though the kale/bacon garnish was not. The banana bread has a reputation as not to be missed, and it was definitely good.

There was a nice cocktail menu. The grapefruit mimosa had more champagne than juice, which was different, though I actually prefer them with more juice.

Certainly worth giving it a try.
