Went to the zoo in February which is an off season. While food stands are not open, most of the exhibits were. The price is free, so you can't go wrong with that. Parking was $20, but that's OK since we didn't pay to get in. For a family of 5, that's perfect.

They are building a new elephant house which is supposed to be open late 2012 or early 2013 (I think). Perfect for viewing from what I understand from one of the volunteers. Of course there are the Panda's. Another must see. We spent the entire day there although in the winter some of the animal outdoor exhibits were closed, it was still a great day. My teenagers really enjoyed it as well as my youngest.

If you decide to eat the food there, keep in mind, it's a little pricey for your normal fastfood grill type fare. But it tasted OK. More places to eat during the busier seasons, but our family really enjoyed the lack of crowds. Worth the visit and we will go back sometime in the future.

This is a brilliant zoo with free admission. The breeding program is phenominal. We were lucky to have a guide - also free as someone had cancelled their tour. The guide whizzed us around at a fast pace to make sure we didnt miss feeding times etc. This was very informative ,but might not be for everyone. We have visited the zoo before unescorted, which is more relaxing ,but I am glad we have had a tour also.

This is the only place I know where you can get such a great zoo experience without paying - It's part of the still-free Smithsonian, though not near the Mall. I've visited in warmer seasons of the year, and would have to say that there are better times to stop by than in March, as I did on this trip. Most of the animals were inside, many out of sight, but that's the fault of the climate, not the management. There was still plenty to see, and Amazonia in particular is worth seeking out at the extreme end of the park (if you entered from the west rather than parking in one of the lots). If you've never seen a panda up close and personal, then this is a good place to do so, though you'll find lots of other interesting creatures to gawk at while there.

Loved the panda's! And fact that it was free to all; there were so many people out enjoying the day with family, friends or just enjoying the outdoors with a run or walk during lunch. A great vibe

One of the many perks of visiting the city is the free venues offered by the Smithsonian museum. This one is a must visit. The best way to get here is to take the metro and walk. From the elephants to the gorillas, to the pandas, to the many houses for smaller animals, the zoo is worth the visit.
