I must say, no matter how many times I come to DC I enjoy wandering the exhibits of the Smithsonian. I abhor the crowds though! I recommend using safe, clean and Eco-friendly metro to reach your museum destinations. Where comfortable shoes and try to plan breaks. I like to meander so one or two museums per day is generally sufficient.
It really isn't a race, it is a discovery. Try to be patient and wait for breaks in the crowd. If you want to read something, just stand still and read it, but try to angle yourself so you aren't blocking another persons view who just wants to glance and move on. People are usually pretty good about allowing you your space.
Use your map, it is your friend! Try to coordinate any "must see" items on your route so you don't have to back track.
One final tip, come alone if you can or set a regroup location with your party at a set time. That way if you want to read all about the mummies, but your friend loves dinosaurs, no one has to feel obligated to rush their viewing experience. You won't see everything, but that's okay. It just gives you a reason to come back again for another visit.
