The Once Upon a Nation story benches are located in different parts of the city. My kids loved the stories so much that we sat in 10 benches over the week visit. what an amazing way to enact the past and bring it to life with little snippets that are so fun and free.
Wish they were in all cities around the country

We stopped at a bench after visiting Franklin museum. What a fun find! A delightful young lady told a wonderful story with dramatic flair. We enjoyed it so much that we went to Trinity Church to hear another. There are 14 altogether and they have a big round sign by a bench. Sadly we discovered on our last day so only go to hear a few, but such a fun way to captured kids imaginations and create interest in history!

Throughout Historic Philadelphia were benches with the iconic yellow sign "Once Upon a National" posted. We had noticed the sign once before but the sight was not staffed. We were delighted to meet Sarah the next day at the Arch Street Meeting House. We were unaware of the program and stumbled upon Sarah who was staffing the location. Enthusiastically she reenacted a roughly 5 minute story. We were enthralled. We left seeking out other locations that also measured up to Sarah's high benchmark. This is a free program and Sarah would not accept a gratuity. Sarah only asked that we make a note of the program to others.

We were provided with a map of the other locations and children were offered stars to commemorate their participation. Not having children I did not inquire if there was more to the program. But the children in our groups were delighted.

We stumbled on this gem by accident. While exploring Philadelphia we were offered a free story. After one story we were hooked. Benches are scattered throughout the historic areas. Each bench offers a storyteller with historical stories that are educational and entertaining. After each story you can collect a star and redeem for a carousel ride in Franklin Square. The Once Upon a Nation storytellers were a highlight of our day. We followed the map they provided to find the benches and stopped to sight see along the way. An easy and FREE way to explore history.

During our sightseeing, we periodically happened upon a circular bench (conveniently located in the shade). After taking a seat, the storyteller would begin a "true story" about something relevant to the area.

Stories were entertaining, enthusiastically told, and offered extra insight into what we'd just seen.

Younger kids are given a flag onto which a star is affixed at each storytelling station. When they get 13 stars, they get a free carousel ride in a nearby park.

Storytellers aren't allowed to accept tips.
