I wouldn't travel from very far to see Salton sea, but I think every SoCal people should do the day trip once. It is definitely unique and reminds you that human shouldn't mess with nature.

The dead fish, the smell, the abandoned buildings,... the whole vibe feel lost apocalyptic. I felt like being in the Mad Max movie, especially when we did the slab city stop.

Get there early, spend the day, do it once, no need to go back.

We drove an hour to get to the Salton Sea thinking it was going to be great, but it wasn't. Maybe it would be better if it was warmer out, but I'm not sure about that. The sea itself is filthy dirty and there are a ton of dead fish on the beach. It smells terrible as well. It's a nice little park & you can actually park an RV there if you choose to. All in all, it was an experience to go here, but we wouldn't do it again.

We drove out to see the salton sea, it was okay, its quite interesting the history of it, but like some reviews said, lots of dead fish on the shore and it really did have its own fowl smell. I can say I've been there, not going back though.

Salton Sea is not quite as apocalyptic as some online review suggest. The sea I beautiful to look at, with the mountains in the background. The sandy beaches are made up of crushed fish skeletons. There are dead fish on the beach-mummified. The sand gets darker the close you get to the muddy water. There are no boaters or swimmers. You can still see how this was a lovely resort in the day, and locally, residents still push for a comeback. As you stand there, you hope they are right. Visit the Visitor Center (fee to park) for a quick overview and easy access to the beach.

Interesting to see, but not really a place to build sandcastles or take a dip. Overall nice drive from Palm Springs. Very large lake.
