Owner description: Fremantle Prison is one of Western Australia’s premier tourist attractions and the only World Heritage listed building in the State. The Prison was built by convicts in the 1850s and was used as a place of incarceration for almost 140 years. With solitary cells and gallows Fremantle Prison is a monument to a system of punishment that is uncomfortably recent. Fremantle Prison now holds the key to history, mystery and fun. Step inside and do time with experienced guides on a fascinating Prison Day Tour. Explore the labyrinth of tunnels 20m beneath the Prison by foot and by boat on a Tunnels Tour adventure. Feeling brave? Delve into the darker side of the Prison’s history on an eerie Torchlight Tour.

Fremantle Prison holds some great stories and I would recommend the ghost story tour at night or equally good, the history tour by day.

Heaps of history in this old complex giving some insight into the early days of WA settlement and the characters who lived here.

“still has that eerie feeling”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 February 2012

As an attraction I can't say it's outstanding but it's certainly somewhere you need to see if in fremantle. Tour guides are great and the premises still holds a certain feeling that makes you really happy to get the hell out of there when your finished the tour.

“Our excellent guide really enhanced the tour”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 February 2012

You enter the prison, which is on top of a hill, through an archway. We did the Doing Time Tour as it was starting just minutes after we arrived. We were summoned by a uniformed man ringing a handbell and ushered into the Reception Area. About twelve of us sat on benches and met Steve our guide. He had the demeanour of a Prison Officer and explained what newly arrived prisoners would expect in a very authoritative way. He showed us around the whole prison which closed in 1991. A couple of the cells contained very interesting pictures painted by former inmates. It was a very hot day when we visited and we could imagine what conditions were like in the exercise yards for inmates who spent most of the day there with little or no shade. Steve graphically described the fights and riots that took place. We saw the execution room where hangings took place until 1964. Steve said we did not have to go into the room unless we really wanted to which we thought was very understanding. The gaol has a well stocked gift shop with items including childrens pyjamas with a prison arrows design! We bought a very good paperback history of the goal and had a good value lunch in the cafe.

The prison is an historic site dating back to early in Western Australias's history. Depressing atmosphere but then thats what it was like then.
