“Reasonable stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2012

Stayed 3 nights at Fothergills of Fremantle at the end of our 3 week tour of WA. Booked the O'Connor Room which was spacious and nicely furnished, although the ensuite was tiny but functional. Kettle with tea and coffee etc and fridge, although not sure how long the jug of milk had been in the fridge as by our second morning, the milk curdled in our morning cuppa!

Breakfasts were good and plentiful, served in a pleasant conservatory. However, the same cakes/muffins appeared on the table 3 mornings in a row, so again not sure how fresh these were.

The B&B is on a very busy road and therefore sitting on the terrace outside was always noisy. The view from the terrace was not all that impressive as it overlooks the industrial port! but we did see some lovely sunsets from there. The B&B is quite well located, only being a 10 minute walk from town, although the last 100 yards or so is uphill and if you didn't want to walk, the free red CAT bus runs from just down the road. The staff were pleasant and helpful.

We booked the airport shuttle on our day of departure as detailed in the information book in our room (although the telephone number was incorrectly listed) and were subsequently advised by the manageress not to book the shuttle as they were inclined to be unreliable and not turn up. We were therefore a little surprised (and relieved!) when the shuttle turned up exactly as scheduled. When we talked to the driver about their apparent unreliability, we were told that the company had changed hands 2 years ago and that they pride themselves on providing an excellent efficient service with good communication and we can only agree that this what we experienced. We would therefore recommend the shuttle and the correct telephone number for them is: 9457 7150. The shuttle is also quite a bit cheaper than a taxi.

Would we stay again? Probably not, as we feel it is not the luxury accommodation as advertised, lacking attention to detail and we therefore feel it is a little overpriced.

Thank you for writing. I am disappointed about your curdled milk and perplexed as fresh milk is put in each room every day! Nevertheless I hope you were able to enjoy the complimentary soft drinks and snacks that were provided in your room.
I am sorry you feel the room was not good value: our prices are much the same as other accommodation in Fremantle even though we are almost the only one to include a full cooked breakfast (except for Wotif bookings).
We do try and make sure we offer more than others - and we try to make sure that overseas visitors return home with tangible memories of their stay such as a complimentary Australian photo calendar or a complimentary guide book of Fremantle. Add to this the art and sculpture collection here at Fothergills and we do believe we have something special for guests :)

The other reviews say it all. Lovely place just a short walk from the free CAT bus into town. Brilliant cooked breakfasts. David and kwi were great hosts, though there was another lady who was quite unwelcoming.

Some issues - Water pressure wasn't too good. Not exactly cheap given the high aussie dollar.

Hi! Thank you for your kind remarks and your appreciation of our cooked breakfasts... I share your concern about the prices which for years have been exceptional value for overseas visitors. However the strengthening of the Aussi dollar has, as you say, made us a little more costly for overseas guests - especially those from UK and USA. Maybe by the time you come again the pendulum will have swung the other way!

Our children paid for us to stay in the English suite at Fothergills of Freemantle as a ruby wedding anniversary present. It could not have been a better choice. Having just received our citizenship in Australia it was great to stay in this particular room! The room was so 'English'. Miles away from modern bland hotel rooms but very comfortable, clean and obviously planned with love. We hope people will support this hotel...its different and well worth a visit.

Our family stayed at this lovely B & B last year and it was such a fantastic stay! Our thanks to David and Kwiyeon for making us feel so welcome. Our family stayed at the Samson & O Connor rooms and both rooms were wonderful - spacious, clean and cosy. Our little boy was pretty naughty but David was understanding and tried to accomodate us. When he's much older, i will definitely bring him back for another stay at this great B & B. Once again, a big thank you to Fothergills for making my stay in Fremantle so memorable.

We were doing a quick 4 day trip to Perth/Fremantle and it didn't take much work to realise Fothergill's of Fremantle had to be THE place to stay: perfect positioning, great choice of rooms, beautiful artwork, many many great reviews and delightful breakfasts!

As we were coming in from Melbourne late into Perth we were concerned that it wouldn't be possible to spend the first night at the B&B, due to no one being awake, but luckily they have a key system at the front door which worked a charm.

The B&B is just 2 mins from the Fremantle Prison, a 5 minute walk down hill to town (prob 10 minutes to Little Creatures) and just around the corner to High St or Ord St where the CAT bus stop (free buses that take you around Fremantle) is.

Freo has most of its parking in parking bays dotted around the place. There is parking on the boundaries on the main part of the city (we parked in Cantonment St to eat at Maya in Market St) but when you are so close we barely used the car, the walk was great and used the bus alot!

We stayed in the English room which was on the first floor of No 18. Beautiful large room, four poster bed, great queen sized bed, beautiful sheets, pillows, divine artwork, lovely balcony out the front and look at those gorgeous curtains (real ones, that actually shut the light out).

David stocks the house with so many things. So many books I was in heaven! Coffee & tea supplies in the bedroom with a fridge that was stocked on the first two days with water (not sure what happened the next two?) and some nibblies. Very nice touch, thank you. Clocks everywhere so you would never be lost for time! Loved the cow sculptures!

Lovely spacious bathroom next door (not ensuite, but as you have the run of that floor its not a problem) with superb shower & bath (which we used on a cooler night) plus loads of supplies of shampoo, conditioner, moisturiser, cotton balls, tampons, etc.

Weather had been very hot and that was one issue for me who feels the heat. Would have been great if the blinds on the balcony were shut down (would do that next time) as the sun shines in all afternoon but as there was an airconditioner in the room it kept it lovely and cool. Would have loved a fan in the room, only because the aircon was SO good it got freezing over the bed and we had to turn it off. Not a problem, just a preference.

Breakfast was wonderful. We met Kwi that weekend and she was warm and lovely and very caring. I'm not sure what happened on the Monday, we had another two ladies neither of whom were warm or even said hi hello how are you. We felt like we were an inconvenience. Very cold and didn't even introduce themselves so I don't know who they were, the only disappointment of the stay, as we even met the owner David who was lovely.

As its a B&B, you would hope for that warm welcoming feeling next time, anyways it was a fabulous place and we would definitely stay again!

Room Tip: As the English Room is on Ord St, be aware this is a main road coming in/going out of Freo so expect...
