“Dark room with no heat control”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 November 2011

Previous reviews told me that the rooms were small so we booked a suite and expected a nice and spacious room since the price of the suite was almost the double of an ordinary room. We were dissapointed; the room was very dark and had no outside view. The larger window in the room faced an indoor corrrridor with several contruction workers passing all day (they started at 7 in the morning). The room had a large bathroom which was heated in the floor, but we found no heat control and felt like we were boiled when we were trying to sleep. The bed was large, but not very comfortable and my back really hurts after staying there 3 nights. The room had a bubble bath - which was nice - but we did not use it since we spent time in the larger swimming pool and bubble bath every day. The SPA treatments were nice - I recommend a hot stone massage.

Room Tip: If you book a suite - make sure you get one in the top floor.

The hotel appears to be almost an after thought, added on to the end and side of an impressive swimming pool, waterpark and gym area. However the hotel part was slightly better than I was expecting based on other reviews here. That said the rooms running down the side of the pool are slightly oddly laid out, small and short on storage with bathrooms which are then relatively quite large, and a strong smell of swimming pool in the maze and chicane like corridor.

Pool and facilities are great and add another dimension, food was relatively good nothing bad anyway, but certainly but overall the standard of the hotel and facilities is not as good as the meriton grand conference.

Location is good for old town and very walkable to the harbour. The local area around the hotel, near the rimi shop can have some local undesirables around but nothing bad. Value of the food in the hotel was ok.

I stayed at the Kalev Spa Hotel by myself for 3 nights while visiting Tallinn.

My first impression upon arriving the first evening was that the hotel itself is very conveniently located, just on the edge of the Tallinn old town where most visitors will want to be anyway. While fairly modern looking and clean, the hotel is not luxurious if that's what you are looking for.

I stayed in what the hotel calls a "spa-class" room, which I would recommend for most people staying there. The room itself was fairly large, quite clean and comfortable (but not luxurious). The bathrooms are modern and seem to be recently renovated. The hotel staff is adequate but not particularly friendly. Other than the very basics, they did not go out of their way to acquaint me with the hotel or the spa/pool/waterpark facilities, which I will get to below.

Breakfast and dinner are included in the very reasonable per night rate but could be very disappointing to some visitors if they are not prepared for it. I attended one dinner (the night of my arrival) and one breakfast (the next morning) and that was enough for me personally. I found the atmosphere in the dining room to be sort of depressing but it may be acceptable to more budget conscious travelers.

Having free access to the saunas, pool, jacuzzis and waterpark was a GREAT plus. If you don't mind the prospect of being in a room with many naked (mostly) Estonian men then you will probably enjoy the facilities. I found the spa/pool/watermark facilities to be a great addition to the experience but difficult to understand initially-- after taking a quick peek my first night to see what the spa was all about, it took me a 2nd visit to understand the system and the layout. That said, I returned a 2nd and a 3rd time during my stay which was a great option given the size of the Tallinn old town, which I came to realize only takes a day or so to tour properly.

Overall, I would recommend Kalev Spa Hotel to travelers on a moderate budget who will be staying in Tallinn for more than 2 days and are interested in having the option of the spa/waterpark to compliment their experience in the old town.

Room Tip: Spa-class rooms (or higher) are the way to go.

Hotel room was quite small and had limited storage, however that said, it was very clean and comfortable, The bathroom was also nice, which believe me if it had been grotty I would comment. Any doubts about this hotel were swiftly removed by the free access to the waterpark which was amazing. The flumes were great fun and the huge jacuzzi pool which was divided into various sections with different activities was so relaxing. Then there was the Olympic sized pool, regular aqua aerobic classes, sauna, resistance pool..... the list goes on, excellent. My husband, a fitness fanatic was bowled over by the gym, which was large and had an excellent selection of free weights, aerobic exercise machines and weight machines. The location of the hotel is superb, walking distance from everything. We spent a day taking a ferry to Helsinki Finland which involved a ten minute walk to the ferry terminal. We only ate breakfast in the hotel, it was nothing exceptional, but there was a choice of hot and cold food and I think something for most peoples palate. Talinn is the newest country to take on the Euro and as a result is definitely not the really cheap holiday it used to be. The prices are quite expensive, on a par with Helsinki and other Scandinavian countries. Take plenty of money with you!!

Room Tip: Make sure you specify if you want a double bed, we did and it was on our booking form. You will defi...
