Review of Graben

Graben
Ranked #5 of 88 Restaurants in Sopron
Certificate of Excellence
Cuisines: Hungarian
Description: telephone number: +36 99/340 256 Excellent hungarian cuisine, very extensive menu, super service. We saw Austrians who had obviously driven over the border to eat lunch there. My partner had the ganseleber (foie gras) which is often over-cooked in Hungary. In this case it was perfect -- "melt in your mouth" perfect -- just cooked on the outside, soft and liquid on the inside. Heavenly! I had the roast goose leg, crispy skin and yet moist on the inside. This dish is very easy to over-cook i.e. the meat ends up dry. But once again this was really delicious. BIG PLUS: for the quality, the prices were very decent. It was very near the centrum (old city) so you might expect higher prices. But no we were pleasantly surprised! What an unexpected treat on the long drive to Budapest.

We ate traditional Hungarian goulash and garlic soup served in a loaf of bread. While the soup was somewhat average, the goulash was a disaster, too salty (so much you couldn't eat it), and the spices tasted funny. The food wasn't too expensive, but definitely overpriced. The waiter didn't know English (he barely knew some German), so it wasn't easy to order.

My husband I were with a large group of employees from his company that we were visiting in Sopron. We had a reservation at another restaurant nearby but the power was out so we moved on to Graben and they were able to take us right away. We had a nice big table inside (too cold to sit outside) and the interior is a neat old cave-like room with traditional décor. It was our first night in Hungary and so we were keen to try traditional Hungarian food and they did a good job. They provided a menu in English and one of the servers spoke a little English. I loved the garlic soup and I also enjoyed Veal Paprika. The restaurant has a nice outdoor area that would be a good place to sit in nice weather. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone going to Sopron.

Enter from the street walk through to the back courtyard to sit beneath the Roman wall! This area is also a walkway to the central square. The soups and mains were excellent and the service exquisite. Head waiter spoke very good English and was very accommodating and professional. The price was fantastic for quality, we went twice while in town!

We went to dinner and ate cordon bleu and sweet chili chicken. Both were extraordinary. If you are there also try the passionfruit lemonade.

I had a great meal here...the pork cutlets from pork knuckle with cheese inside. This also included vegetables and hand cut fries. A big meal. It was the most l spent on a meal in Hungary, but it was not too much (2400 huf). There are two gardens and they had some nice live music. The staff was very kind! They have a nice menu of pork, beef, poultry, fish, and game dishes. Also, full bar with local spirits.
