Well-located hotel with great breakfast and friendly staff

Review of Hotel Barbakan
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 3 Jun 2019
We stayed for 2 nights in Hotel Barbakan. The staff was friendly from the first moment and the food at the breakfast was delicious. The room itself was clean and the bed was comfortable.

They close the main door after 10 PM for security reasons, but you only have to ring and they open it almost instantly.

Two negative things I could mention: the AC had some strange odour when turned on (we didn't use it much, because we didn't need to) and the view from our room was facing at a construction. These were minor things since we didn't spend too much time inside, mostly we used our room for sleeping.

All in all, it's a great hotel for its price. Recommended!

This hotel has 9 rooms. 2 of them are on the top floor. The elevator stops at the floor just below. This could be an issue for some. The hotel was full on the night we arrived. Their 2 lots have 1 space allotted to each room. We arrived late and the one space left was meant for a small car so ours didn’t fit. After trouble shooting with the front desk, we decided to double park which worked out in the end. There are only 2 spots which will work adequately for a van. After the initial problem, everything else was good. The front desk staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was clean. The A/C worked fine, but was noisy. The bathroom was clean with a soap dispenser in the shower. The WiFi speed was good. A free breakfast was included. The food was ok. We had to wait to eat because there weren’t enough tables available for all of the guests to eat at the same time. We liked the location as it was a 10 to 15 minute walk to the historical sites. I was happy staying at this hotel and would choose this location again.

Room tip: The two top floor rooms do not have elevator access.

Strongly recommended! Inexpensive relative to chain hotels, but not lacking in quality.

Location is within a 5 minute walk of the Cathedral, 10 minutes to the main square. Free parking, which is hard to find so close to downtown. Fully renovated rooms with air conditioning and well appointed bathrooms (good water pressure in showers too).

Breakfast buffet is top notch, ranging from yoghurt and muesli to scrambled or sunny side eggs, stewed peppers, full selection of coldcuts, rolls, jams etc.

Tips:
- Not a lot of English spoken, but staff very friendly and helpful
- Try to get a room on the east side; away from traffic and hot afternoon sun
- Lower floors are cooler in summer
- Parking is across the street; go to front desk to have them lift the bar
- Beds are European singles, comfortable but narrow for larger guests; push two together for a double bed
- Cash payment only, no credit cards at present
- Small fridge in room is very handy

We were absolutely satisfied with this cosy, small hotel. It has a great location very close to the city centre, its own parking lot, free wi-fi, lift and 24-hour reception, where everyone was totally friendly. Also the breakfast was wonderful, helpful staff, fresh food hot and cold. Rooms were ok, clean, well equiped. Check-out at 11 is also advantage. We would definitely come again.

Our Hungarian friends booked us there for four nights. Walking distance to center city. Clean with good service. Breakfast buffet is full and included. More than enuf to keep you going into afternoon. Air conditioned and individually controlled. Fine three start hotel at value prices. As American visitors to Pecs we found it a nice location to enjoy this lovely city without needing our car.
