Old Monarchia Hotel

Reviewed 10 December 2012

This is not a hotel. It's a room in a dingy building which is also occupied by residents and businesses. The 'hotel' is a restaurant that opens at 11.00 a.m. Reception is a small desk in the corner of the bar that is never manned. The room is never cleaned or the linen changed. The beds are low and bad for the back. Our shower was broken, Hot water runs out. The toilet seat was broken. There is no bath. We were fleeced with two welcome drinks that actually were not free - they cost £20.00 and were supposed to contain three wine measures and two rum measures (we were not told the contents or amounts in advance). Basically, you are given a key to a room and that's it - there's no more contact with staff apart from when they try to coerce you into eating in the dreadful restaurant. You pay for the room in advance on the first day so there's no point complaining. They pretend they can't speak English if you try. Some of them work in several restaurants along the street and who knows where the food is actually cooked. Don't bother - it's terrible, I was given processed, over-cooked chicken - a dog bone would have been easier to chew. There is no phone in the room; no hair-dryer and the satellite TV doesn't work. The furniture is old and dirty. There was an old ball of chewing gum on my bed side table. It's noisy in the street and the adjoining walls to other rooms are so thin you can everything that is said and done so don't expect to sleep well. We didn't dare leave our bags on check out day (you vacate at 11.00 a.m.) because we were afraid they wouldn't be there when we got back. The staff are extremely rude and unhelpful. The only good thing you can say is the rooms are warm (but there is no air-conditioning so they are too warm at night) and there is Wi-fi. Otherwise - absolutely awful. We would never stay here again.

Room Tip: Don't choose any of the rooms. Stay elsewhere.

They will empty your wallets ...
One glass of disgusting wine 2000 forint! And I should say that I couldn't drink my wine because it was awfull (and I was very sick) and then I saw them put the wine back in the bottle for the next lucky customer!
Just don't go there!! Don't go!

I'll keep this brief, but I could go on forever about how bad this place was.

* This is not a hotel- it's more like a pension. There is no reception, you just get a key and are sent around the side. No one will clean your room etc.
* The staff are the most unfriendly and unhelpful I have ever experienced. Many of them were clearly drunk during the day.
* Unless you get a ground floor room (7, 8 or 9) you will be in for disaster.
* The only redeeming feature is that you are ideally located.

On our first night we were put in room 15 on the 2nd floor. It is the worst room I have ever seen. The room had not been cleaned before we were shown it. The toilet was full of excrement still and even after flushed the entire room smelt of sewers. The wall had holes in it. The boiler was in the bathroom with loose electric cables. The was a used plaster in the bed. The mattress was covered in blood.

We stupidly stayed in the room but on the second night the toilet flooded and was leaking all over the bathroom. We complained and thankfully a woman who worked at the hotel convinced one of the male staff, who seemed unconcerned, to move us. We then went to room 9 on the ground floor. This room was actually fairly good, despite some faults. But I would not recommend this "hotel" to anyone.

Room Tip: If you decide to brave this place, you should only accept a room on the ground floor. Either 7, 8 or...

Just back from a week in Budapest in this terrible so-called hotel.
We were given a "room" on the 3rd floor which actually was a standard flat, including kitchen, living room turned into a bedroom, second bedroom, ... The place was clean and huge but...
a) There was no airco which forced us to leave the windows open not to die (+42°C), which in turn made it impossible to sleep before 1:00AM (Vaci Utca is the busiest pedestrian street of Budapest).
b) Since the windows did not have proper curtains, anyone from the opposite buildings could look at us on our bed and...daylight woke us up at 4:00AM.
We complmained the next day and were given a very nice room on the ground floor. This room was just perfect but unless we complained we probably would not have been given it. My advice ask for or the following rooms: 7, 8 or 9 (ours).

As for the restaurant, it is clearly a rip off. While we had our only meal there, the first one, complaints about the invoice came from two tables. Check places like La Coppola instead.

Finally, when my credit card receipt came in, I realised we had also been ripped off on the hotel bill. Price indicated when booking was 273€ but they converted this into Forints (Hungarian currency) at an incredible rate which resulted in a cost of 338€ on my credit card, thus almost a 25% increase.
Nevertheless, considering that this hotel is located in one of the most convenient areas of Budapest, is cheap, and may even be a nice place to stay if you get the proper room, I would recommend:
- a) make sure to get one of rooms 7, 8, or 9
- b) make sure to pay in euros
- c) stay away from the restaurant

If not, run away.

Room Tip: DO NOT get any other room than number 7, 8 or 9.
