This tiny simply decorated restaurant is well hidden in a rather threadbare little shopping mall well off the beaten tourist track in the city centre. The staff friendly and helpful. Beware of the working hours. The restaurant is only open for lunch and dinner.

We had a preset six course dinner and it was brilliant. We were spared the trouble of reading the menu. Actually, there is none. You get what the chef decided to prepare that day. The chef is prepared to do a few tweaks if you have special quirks.

The six course menu consisted of a simple yet delicious fish soup, followed by sea bass (sprinkled with cardamom) and salmon sashimi served on a bed of veggies and soy sauce foam, the seared sea bass in two different marinades, the filling okonomiyaki (egg omelet with cabage) covered with dancing bonito flakes, a tuna, salmon, sea bass and shrimp nigiri, and finally a light dessert of a lime yoghurt mousse with berries and miso chocolate.

We flushed down the food with a seductive Hitachino nest red rice ale.

I will definitely visit again.

We were very surprised and amazed with the quality of food. Located in the shopping center, do not get confused, service is a bit slow, but well worth it. They can make dishes outside their set menus, keep pushing! Tuna was very fresh and as good as in famous Tokyo's fish market!

When visiting Sato Bento don't let the unassuming exterior put you off - inside there is a hidden gem offering delightful food, swift service and an authentic Japanese vibe. However make sure to book a table a few days in advance as the restaurant is quite small. We visited the restaurant for chef's choice 6 course dinner. On entering, the atmosphere transported us straight to Japan. The waitress was very helpful, polite and looked like she was enjoying herself at work, which is always a good sign. As hors d'oeuvres we had some perfectly steamed edamame. The first course was a fish soup with tofu, chicken and homemade buckwheat noodles. It was nicely seasoned and we enjoyed the fresh flavours. Second dish was anchovy and arctic char sashimi on cucumbers followed by asparagus, radish, broccoli purée and pear agar-agar jelly. Arctic char sashimi was nice although the combination of different flavours in the same dish didn't form a whole. On the next plate we tasted sea bass, pear, potato and sour cream sprinkled with peanuts. The dish was fantastic and the fish was nicely cooked although I wouldn't describe the flavours to be having much to do with an authentic japanese cuisine as much as it resembled a slovene or experimental, 'fusion' cuisine . The fourth meal was a crab egg omelette with cabbage covered with bonito flakes (katsobushi), mayonnaise and barbecue sauce. In my opinion the sauces were totally unnecessary since the taste faded away, also the omelette was a bit burnt on the lower side. The next to last dish was a sushi plate which exceeded our expectations. We got five different nigiri (salmon, grilled salmon, maguro, toro and shrimp) and maki with mango, tuna and asparagus. Everything was perfect and toro nigiri was probably the best I had in my life. For dessert we received chocolate mousse with caramel, miso paste, white chocolate cream and strawberries. It looked like nothing to write home about but the taste was amazing. Overall we had a wonderful dinner and we will most certainly be back.

...all you have to do is relax and enjoy the food they bring you. A great break from having to choose the food you are not that familiar with and thus - at least me - sticking to the dishes that I know and like... Sato Bento takes you on a journey, and a delicious one, into the japanese food that is not only about sushi, but much more. A very small place, but somehow not too noisy and overcrowded, as the tables are generally for two - caution: if you are a group of four you have to book in advance, for there is really not much space. The simplicity of the place, very reasonable prices and excellent food make you forget about the location in the shopping mall that is really not that nice, and concentrate on delicious food. Absolute winner and I warmly recommend it.
