The Metropol is very well located for downtown Warsaw - a legacy from its earlier days as one of the main hotels of the communist era.

Unfortunately, that history leads to some of its key drawbacks:
- it is very noisy at night - you need earplugs to cut out the trams and rowdy party-goers - and all rooms face the street
- the heating is uncontrollable in the rooms, with no air conditioning, so you'll need the window open unless the weather is cold (even when it's shut, you'll hear the street noise)
- the standard rooms are small - originally mainly singles, so space is at a premium with nowhere to sit
- Unlike most of Warsaw, wifi is NOT free (unless you book direct on the hotel website); it's not very expensive, but the service is slow and poor, with a stupid browser log-in which wastes a lot of time
- the hotel is used by some coach tour parties, so the bar/restaurant can be dominated by these some nights - not a big problem.

On the plus side:
- the breakfast buffet is very good - we ate well enough to not need lunches whilst we stayed
- the location for public transport is excellent, on the main metro line and many tram and bus routes
- the 175 bus from the airport stops right outside - and can also be used to travel up to the Old Town for meals and tourism.

You do get what you pay for - the Metropol is fairly good value for money if you can live with its downsides.

Room Tip: The hotel apparently has some newer "Executive" rooms with a/c and more space. We didn...

The staff at the front counter seem quite indifferent towards us as we checked in and we seemed more of a hindrance than anything else. We were told to go to the 6th level despite having a room number starting with 3. Naturally we got to the 6th level and realised that this was not our rooms level. This wasn't a great start.

We were in a basic room which was well, very basic. There was not even air-conditioning and it can get hot with two people in the room. There might be air-conditioning in the hallway, but if there is this doesn't get past a closed door. You cannot have the window open as the room will be filled with street noise during the night.

It was a fairly old style bathroom and the bottom of the door frame had been mostly eaten away by rot.

The pillows were of very average quality and needed replacing.

If you need something no frills to stay near the central train station in the middle of Warsaw this is the place.
