Really great presentation of the region's rich coal mining history.

The first part of the two-hour tour involves looking at a great collection of old mine safety equipment. The second part takes you down into an old mine, where they demonstrate actual mining equipment used.

Our guide for the mine part was fantastic! Didn't speak a word of English (fair enough, especially in this less visited part of the CZ), but engaged us nonetheless, pointing at things, showing with his hands and so on. They rent audio guides in various languages for non-Czech speakers, which is a great idea. Unfortunately there are a few hiccups though - for one of us, it was playing the mine part during the mine safety exhibition, and I had to skip through various languages at each stop on mine. The audio guide also doesn't give nearly the level of detail as the actual guides do. Nonetheless, a great idea for dealing with foreign visitors.

Also notable that they have a great collection of equipment (trucks, etc.) outdoors too, and may even have a small train for children in the summer (?). Unfortunately too cold when we visited to enjoy the outdoor component.

Really well done and worth a visit!

Great for children and adults as well. First time I seen on my mind how the coal was mined. The guide was ex coal miner and provided details of each presented part of the job plus many storis from the real coal miners life. Highly recommended tourist destination sport. Also the little diesel train is impressive and lovely for the children - but can take also adults.

“The parks tells the history of this region”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2012

I have visited various mining ghost towns in the US but the Landek Park Mining Museum was an entirely different experience. For one, this was the very first time that I actually visited a mine underground and got to see how people here used to earn a living. Visitors first visit a mining museum with lots of equipment, where it is explained how miners worked. Later the tour continues underground in the Dul Ed. Urxe, where visitors get to explore through the underground mining shafts. The tour guide was a former coal miner, as were several of those on the tour, who brought their grandchildren. The tour was about 90 min long. It was in Czech, which I speak, and it didn't occur to me to inquire about tours in English. They probably have tourguides who speak English, though I have no idea how often these are offered. The tour I was on had about 50 people, so getting down into the mine by the original elevator took a while. Ostrava had for most of the 20th century a bad reputation as a dirty city with very bad air quality. Today it is a clean and pleasant city with a past that can be revisited in a place like Landek Park. I went here with a friend who had a 2 year old in a stroller and eventhough the tour was pretty long, the 2 year old seemed to enjoy the experience, we had no problems. Once we emerged from the underground, there is a mining train that had been turned into a children's ride and also a restaurant where we had lunch. The meal was average at best, but it was also pretty inexpensive. Overall this was a great visit and I would recommend this park and museum to visitors to the Ostrava region.

“Had we understood Czech this would have gotten a higher rating”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 August 2012

This is a large park with a variety of things to do. Unfortunately, there is virtually no information in English and it was difficult even to purchase tickets to the mine tour and rescue exhibition. There is a lot of mining equipment strewn about the grounds but no information to explain it. The mine tour is entirely in Czech and includes a 20+ minute discourse after you first enter the mine. Once we began moving, there were things to see and my husband understood most of them with no need for the commentary. I was totally clueless. The situation improved slightly at the mine rescue exhibit as the tour guide found us booklets in English, but they were of limited use. There was another 20 minutes of lecture before we could move on to see the equipment and the video which we could understand somewhat. I am not complaining about the lack of information in English but rather letting you know that it could be, in this location, a detriment to enjoying the attraction.

We had lunch nearby at Harenda U Barborky, originally a miners pub. Food was good and reasonably priced though several things had been crossed off the already limited menu.
