“No Place for Seniors!”
Reviewed 27 March 2012

The 3 Crowns advertises convenient location and transportation. In reality, the tram is at the top of a long cobblestoned hill; the bus is a short, but steep cobblestone sidewalk away. The tram does make convenient stops, but the bus takes a circuitous route around the city. In winter, or wet weather, both vehicles are require navigating treacherous slopes. Old Town Square and other destinations are expensive 20 minute cab rides from the hotel. The hotel is comprised of two buildings. The lobby, restaurant and bar are in the main building. Here, there is free wireless access in the guest rooms and bar. There is no wireless across the street.Smoking rooms in the main building are on the 4th floor. While I was there, the elevator was broken. Despite my reservation indicating "handicapped," the desk manager said I could use the stairs and they would help me with my luggage. My daughters would be on another floor. We ended up in the "spare" rooms in the opposite building (with a functional elevator.) "Spare" meaning sparsely furnished, dingy, ill-lighted- and no wireless. The restaurant, which needs refurbishing, served oversalted stringy smoked meats on the Farmer's Platter; and tough, grizzley chunks of "beef" in a salty gravy. Forget the stale, dry Bohemian "dumplings," nothing more than dessicated white bread. Breakfast might have been held over from the day before.
While some of the problems might be attributed to my inability to use stairs and imperfect equilibrium, plus the bitter cold and light snow coating the sidewalks, this is not a hotel I can recommend.

Room Tip: The rooms in the main building might be nicer.

This hotel was situated in a quiet area of Prague, and was great for puplic transport into the city, trams and buses ran close by,and you could walk it in 40 minutes. The rooms were basic but clean and warm, for more cash we could have been upgraded to a recently refurbished room. The bar was good and drinks not too expensive, the buffet breakfast was ok,but the evening dinner was terrible. The staff were friendly but could not speak English that well, but thats the case in Prague. If on a mini break I would recommend here.

The Three Crowns Hotel lies in a neighbourhood at 20 minutes walking from the city center. It is quite close to a tramway stop (2 tramways that drive you downtown in a very few minutes). The street it's quiet and it's made safe by the persence of a Police station.
Rooms are big, clean and comfortable even if quite basic: despite the pretense of a design hotel they could improve! In particular, I would have prefered to have a real wardrobe instead of an open-air rack.
Wifi is free of charge.
The breakfast is good and offers quite a good choice.
The inner garden in cosy but I could not enjoy it staying there in november: far too cold for myself!

There are definitely good and bad things about this hotel - overall, my recommendations would be, if you don't get your hopes up in the first place, you may have a pleasant stay.

First of all, I would mention that it is possible that there are two separate buildings to this hotel, across the road from each other. The side we stayed in most definitely is not what is depicted in all advertising for the hotel - it was run down, outdated and quite shabby, with the smallest bathroom I have ever seen. The shower didn't drain until the water was switched off, leaving you standing ankle deep in dirty water.

The beds were comfortable enough, and although the bathroom was beyond tiny, the room was very large (although the space not utilised all that well). On the plus side, there is free, fast wi-fi available in all areas of the hotel, including the room, and the lobby area was quite nice, with a lovely bar. Breakfast was included in the room price and included a reasonable selection of food and drinks.

The hotel is situated about a half hour's walk from Old Town Square, although there is a tram stop about a five minute walk away which will take you into town in about ten minutes.

The hotel staff were mostly very nice, and all spoke good English.

I can't comment on whether this is a regular occurrence, but on our last night, what sounded like the fire alarm went off three times, for a minute or so each time at about 5.00 am. Each time I was about to get up and get ready to evacuate, the alarm would stop. A good thing, given it was about -12 degrees outside.

Basically, you have a 50/50 chance of having a very pleasant stay indeed, or being rather disappointed with your room, as we were. I just think travellers should have fair warning that chances are they may not necessarily be staying in a room that is of such quality as is depicted. We may have chosen to stay elsewhere knowing this was the case.

We booked our break through Holiday Hypermarket which included our gatwick parking and transfers to the hotel from the Prague Airport, all went like a dream. We book a superior room with a few more mod cons. Very clean and nicely laid out, only grumble was not enough hangers or storage space so lived out of the suitcase. The breakfast was ok with a good choice of hot and cold food. The Staff were very helpful as well. I would recommend you change your money up when you get there at any exchange place as the rate was much better. DO NOT use the people in the street as you will get more than you bargain for! The Town is easy reach by walking, takes about 20 mins to the square. We didn't use any transport as you get to see so much more when on foot. Its very quiet in January and we found we didn't have to que for anything. The Bars and clubs were near on empty but after 7 hours of walking Dinner in the hotel and early to bed was in need. Enjoy the experience and 3 days is plenty to see all the sites and more.

Room Tip: Go for the Superior room, they are at the back of the hotel so really quiet.
