Owner description: Prague Zoological Garden is situated near the center of the Czech capital, in a unique rugged landscape on the bank of the Vltava River. It opened in 1931 and during its existence of more than 80 years it has risen to become one of the most prestigious zoos in the world. Today, it is the second most visited tourist destination in the Czech Republic, just after Prague Castle. 4,600 animals and 680 species live in Prague Zoo. You can explore 12 pavilions and 150 exhibits over 58 hectares. The kids will love the Bororo Reserve, chairlift, mini-train, observation tower, paddling pool and Children’s Zoo. The pride of the zoo is its Elephant Valley, home to a sizeable herd of Asian elephants. The Giant Salamander House, where you can see the largest amphibians in the world – the critically endangered Chinese Giant Salamanders – is extraordinary as well; and the African House with an adjacent vast meadow inhabited by herds of antelopes and giraffes is worth your attention, too. However, Prague Zoo also has other interesting places: for instance, the Pavilion of Gorillas with the only breeding family of gorillas in the Czech Republic; Chambal, presenting one of the most endangered species of crocodiles in the world – gharials; or the Indonesian Jungle Pavilion, a giant greenhouse presenting a sample of the South Asian rainforest and its inhabitants.

“Superb zoo with great value for money”
Reviewed 30 May 2012

We love city breaks and make a habit of visiting the zoo wherever possible, so we were looking forward to this and we weren't disappointed! It edges Amsterdam and is now our favourite so far.

Easy to get to from the city - take the Metro to Nadrazi Holesovice, turn left outside and there's a bus stand at the side of the station with a sign for the zoo - bus number 112 which just goes backwards and forwards between the station and the zoo. Entrance fee is only 200kc for adults, which is half what you'd pay in the UK.

The zoo is in two distinct parts - the older part is on the lower ground nearest to the main entrance, then there is the newer part up the sloping paths to the right as you go in, which utilises the natural woodland terrain and which they are further developing with a new enclosure for the elephants and hippos. If you don't want to walk up and down the sloping paths that link the two levels, there's a chairlift for only 20kc which gives you spectacular views right down to the city.

A great feature is the indoor pavilions such as the Indonesian Jungle and the Terrarium where they have two huge anacondas. Far too many things to mention, but the silverback gorilla has pride of place!

What impressed us most was the number of kiosks for food, drink and WCs dotted about the zoo. It was quite busy with school trips etc. the day we went, but we never had to queue for anything, and prices were cheaper than cafes etc. outside: rip-off UK please take note! Example in the main restaurant (very clean and modern with a lovely outside terrace) was a plated hot meal (not fast food) for 69kc - go figure!

This is a great day out and is probably the best value for money you'll get in Prague. As you can probably tell, we were very impressed!

“Great for a family afternoon (or a nice date)”
Reviewed 29 May 2012

Prague ZOO is a wonderful piece of nature hidden not too far from the busy city centre. It's been recently renovated (after big floods approx. 10 years ago).

Would recommend for a family visit and a nice quiet date.
