Owner description: Prague Zoological Garden is situated near the center of the Czech capital, in a unique rugged landscape on the bank of the Vltava River. It opened in 1931 and during its existence of more than 80 years it has risen to become one of the most prestigious zoos in the world. Today, it is the second most visited tourist destination in the Czech Republic, just after Prague Castle. 4,600 animals and 680 species live in Prague Zoo. You can explore 12 pavilions and 150 exhibits over 58 hectares. The kids will love the Bororo Reserve, chairlift, mini-train, observation tower, paddling pool and Children’s Zoo. The pride of the zoo is its Elephant Valley, home to a sizeable herd of Asian elephants. The Giant Salamander House, where you can see the largest amphibians in the world – the critically endangered Chinese Giant Salamanders – is extraordinary as well; and the African House with an adjacent vast meadow inhabited by herds of antelopes and giraffes is worth your attention, too. However, Prague Zoo also has other interesting places: for instance, the Pavilion of Gorillas with the only breeding family of gorillas in the Czech Republic; Chambal, presenting one of the most endangered species of crocodiles in the world – gharials; or the Indonesian Jungle Pavilion, a giant greenhouse presenting a sample of the South Asian rainforest and its inhabitants.

Little big far of the city, but managable by public transportation. Take a subway and then a bus.

Not to be missed if you have a spare day. I absolutely loved it and the animals are well cared for. The highlight of my trip.

Great place to go for a walk and relax. If you don't want to walk, you can use the train :) You can find there many species of animals, cages and runs are clean and large. Everything's clean and it's easy to orientate oneself.

Really lovely zoo, highly recommend it. It would be a great day out for families (though my and my husband went and loved it - we are just big kids though).

We have visited several Zoo's over the world and we were very impressed with Prague Zoo. The entrance fee is really cheap at around £6 and worth every penny. There's some fantastic enclosure's and they are building some large new enclosure's so lots going on. The polar bears are great to watch playing in the water, they have several big cats and you could spend hours watching the gorilla's. Allow yourself around 4 hours to get around the zoo and try to go early morning as it gets busy by lunchtime.
